I see that many young german players are children of the north american players who played in Del in 1990s. Back then it was considered ridiculous that so many foreign players took the playtime from germans. No their children can represent Germany internationally. Maybe that wasn´t so bad thing after all to gather so many na-based players.

Whereas that could be thought to be a natural side effect of so many North Americans having made player careers in Germany, very few of the North American kids have made it to Germany's national teams and in fact, very few of them are currently playing considerable roles in the DEL. Hardly any of them, to be honest.

On the other hand, Leon Draisaitl, Dominik Kahun, Matthias Plachta and kids on the way such as Lukas Reichel and Tobias Ancicka are all sons of players born and raised in Eastern Europe who made a career of it in Germany.

There are kids coming up like Sam Dubé and Luigi Calce who are the sons of former Canadian imports. Nick Latta is a regular DELer (brother Louis is in the lower leagues) and they're the sons of Canadian Ken Latta, who played for a while and has coached a real long time. Same story for the four Samanski brothers, with Josh looking like the most promosing (just played for the WJC team and was with Oshawa last season). Mark MacKay was a bit of a DEL legend, but his sons never really amounted to much in the pro circuits.

These are just the examples off the top of my mind (I could be overlooking some guys), but the North American kids just haven't made the impact on the program - or in the pro ranks here - that has been seen by the sons of Eastern Europeans who played here.

Sidenote:
Dmen Tommy Pasanen and Jesse Kauhanen are up-n-comers in the German system and both are sons of Finns who made a career of it in Germany.

I think the top young(ish) players with North American roots are probably Parker Tuomie who is already 25 and his father never played in the DEL if I recally correctly, and Boaz Bassen whose father Mark played 6 seasons in the DEL. His cousin Chad is now playing in the DEL2 after 16 or so seasons in the DEL.

I was hoping that maybe Nolan DuPont (born in 2006), who I think is the son of Micki DuPont, would stay in Germany, but he went back to Canada. Which is probably best for his development.
Another kid I was hoping (pre-pandemic) to get a better look at this season was Cameron Leask, son of Rob Leask I believe. Maybe someone to keep an eye on.

But yes for the most part it were kids whose parents came from the Czech Republic or Poland and so on, that have made a bigger impact on German hockey.

With the games within the divisions over here is the list of U23 players and their ice time.

As mentioned in my previous post I looked into the U23 goalies as well.
The tracking of goalie stats in the DEL sucks so, I could not make it as detailed as I would have liked, and I cannot be entirely sure everything is correct, but this is what I came up with based on the DEL website and eliteprospects.

Thanks for this, as always.

Really wondering whether Quapp is going to be with the U18 in Texas? I think he's just eligible as all players born in 2003 or later are considered eligible, if my info is correct.

He would seem the logical candidate for the team.

Question for you DEL followers, is there any legit top two rounds prospects for the 2022 NHL draft? Are Luca Hauf, Roman Kechter, Adrian Klein and Leo Hafenrichter good players? I only know Julian Lutz, nobody else. Thanks a lot!!

Yes, Quapp would be eligible. And I would expect him to be there. Krefeld play their last game on April 18 and while Nikita has been playing quite a bit lately, I doubt his team would keep him from attending the training camp and I would guess quarantine before the tournament. They still have Belov, Cüpper and I think Kapteinat as potential goalies. They won't make the playoffs anyway so why stop him from playing against the best of his peers.
I can only see health reasons stopping him from playing at the U18. I believe he missed a game he was supposed to start recently due to minor injury or illness. Though I am not entirely sure I remember correctly.

If I had to guess Quapp will be the starter for Germany with Luca Ganz as backup. As third goalie I would expect either Babulis (if he eligible and willing to play for Germany) or if they want to go with an underager then probably Simon Wolf. And I could see Wolf challenging Ganz as backup.
Before Quapp's play in the DEL I would have thought Wolf might even be contending for the starter's job. Now it seems less likely since Quapp has aquitted himself fairly well playing in the DEL behind a team that was a train wreck in most games.

So with regular season over I updated my U23 ice time ranking and included some additional stats like penalty minutes, +/-, and how many games the players played more than 20, 15, 10 or 5 minutes respectively. I also list the number of games a player was dressed but did not see any ice time. I hope it is not too confusing.

To me it is kind of weird that the record books will say that Steven Raabe played 25 DEL games this year, when in 11 of them, all he got to do was sit on the bench watching his teammates play.

I would appreciate some feedback if there are any stats I should remove or add in the future. The stats available are pretty limited, but I could add face off stats or shots on goal for example.
The stats for the goalies and the teams will follow later tonight.

Top quality starts as usual @Maverick41, appreciate it very much! Your threads are my one-stop-shop for German junior stats and I got to know a lot of talent.

Also hats off to Tobias Ancicka pulling off very solid numbers. Most German goalies I can think of were rather late bloomers.

Edit: Kudos also to my beloved KEC but if it wasn’t for their financial constraints this year there’s no way we would have played with nearly as many u23 players.

I haven’t been following the southern league as much this year but is Ingolstadt eliminating Munich a big upset? I for one didn’t see that coming but good for them!

I would say it's a moderate upset. It would have been a bigger upset if it was a best-of-7 or at least best-of-5 series. In best-of-3 even heavy favourites can lose quite easily.
Also Ingolstadt has one of the better goalies in Michael Garteig and he was huge in game 1. Munich was also missing Patrick Hager who is an experienced and usually pretty valuable playoff performer.
But even given all that it is still an upset.
Now, if Straubing would knock out Mannheim, that would be a huge upset, but in one game anything can happen.

On a side note:
Not unexpected, but still a little sad is the decline of ice time for most of the U23 players in the playoffs. It has only been two games, so it's a really small sample size, but it seems quite obvious that most teams go back to the vets and imports over their prospects.

Who is relegated this year ? Isn't this season supposed to be the one where teams can get relegated/promoted ?

No-one will be relegated.

However, the DEL2 is playing its final as of today and that features Kassel vs. Bietigheim. Whichever team wins is in the DEL next season!

Ok, thanks ! And what about 21/22 season, will DEL stay with 15 teams for 22/23 or ?

Congrats to the Bietigheim Steelers, they beat Kassel today and now officially eligible for the next DEL season!

Tough look for Kassel, looking forward to see them maybe next year then :)

It is rather odd/ironic that the very team that prior to the season was unable to meet the licensing requirements to play in DEL2, and reportedly was in deep financial trouble, not only handed their licensing paperwork for the DEL at the deadline but now also becomes the team that can get promoted...

That's a good point and, of course, they will only move up to the DEL if the ensuing paperwork passes the test.

Will it?

If it does, everyone's going to be wondering how they went from "rags to riches" in such a short period of time.

Of course, there may be a more considerable benefactor behind the scenes than is yet known about.

Adler Mannheim is a powerhouse right now. Already had good players and signed some new good players. They are gonna be a challenger for Champions League gold.
