With the season starting next week, that's obviously been the attention-grabbing headline, as it should be. I myself, however, have been thinking about the team going in to next season and what the roster could look like. Players coming off the books:
  • Nuge - UFA
  • Chiasson - UFA
  • Ennis - UFA
  • Haas - UFA
  • Nygard - UFA
  • Kahun - RFA
  • Khaira - RFA
  • Larsson - UFA
  • Barrie - UFA
  • Koekkoek - UFA
  • Smith - UFA
Up front, Nuge is obviously top priority. I don't think Chiasson, Haas, Nygard, and Khaira will return. Ennis I would still try to keep around for another year at a similar price point. Kahun seems like he'd be a candidate for a long-term contract.

On D, Koekkoek wouldn't return based on prospects pushing up. Barrie, I would sign-up ahead of Larsson based on two-way ability and I think he'd be perfect to mentor Bouchard. Speaking of Larsson, I would attempt to sign-and-trade him, maybe recoup a 2nd for this years draft (I'm hoping a 1st from a contender). Russell should either be gone in the expansion draft or traded in the summer; can't see him returning despite signing an extension.
Klefbom is the big fish we need to decide on. I love the dude, but if we can package him in a trade to land, say Seth Jones, or another top forward (winger for McDavid?) you gotta look at that, or the very least consider an offer sheet on young d-men coming off their ELC's and taking a look at RFA dmen in the summer, here's a few of who we get:
  • Dahlin
  • Heiskanen
  • Makar
  • Hughes
  • Hronek
  • Fabbro
Would I be willing to give up: 2 firsts, 1 second, and 1 third for Dahlin (5x$9.5), yeah I would.

What would you guys do going forward?

If the team isn’t already in negotiations with Nuge about extending his deal, they should be.

Chiasson is a goner unless he’s willing to accept a heavy pay cut.

The rest of them are playing for their next contract.

RNH is the only sure thing to get signed. Kahun and Khaira will get qualified. The rest will depend on this season.

No way Khaira gets qualified. Worst player on the team. UFA's don't get protected and signed only after the expansion draft.

My... you are optimistic. I'm not sure where you are going to get the cap to:
Sign Nuge... ok, but it'll cost you
Sign Kahun long term. He will want short term unless he puts up huge numbers, in which case we'll want short term to keep the $$$ down
Barrie: will be looking for $6M+ as a UFA in a recovering COVID market. It's his last chance at a longer term contract.
Klefbom is going to be part of a trade for Seth Jones? Riiiiight.
And on top of that we're going to offer sheet Dahlin (but Buffalo won't match)

I'm as optimistic as they come, but this is a bit detached.

Why is Kahun a candidate for a long term contract? He has yet to play even one game for us?

I'm saying he seems like he would. I have a feeling he's going to click with both Connor n Leon and be a legit top-6 option long term for these guys.

Zero chance Khaira gets qualified.

OK, not zero.

0.0000000001% chance he gets qualified.

Bad news on the RNH front. Between Nuge and Nurse Holland has some extraordinary work to do in front of him. Failing to sign those two will blacken both eyes of Holland and likely determine, imo, the ability of the Oilers to compete for a cup over the nest decade. Both those contracts "need" to be done ASAP or will be distractions for everyone moving forward.

Kharia has been rough 5v5. To say the least. But he is one of the best PKers in the league. On a team with few enough to fill that role. He is likely getting qualified even if expensive imo.

I think they move Khaira or dont qualify him and we see McLoed come into that 4th line C spot next year.

At this point, I don't think the Oilers are good enough or deep enough to carry a PK specialist.

We've seen this story before. Lets wait till he actually does something to warrant that talk.
