Season is only a few days ahead and teams are making big decisions on who's in and who's out. What player cut, send down, waived surprised you the most?

On my top list would be Sami Niku for the Jets, even if he looked average in his own zone, he looked good offensively.

Surprised as well that Aberg for the Oilers and Lias Andersson for the Rangers didnt make it.

I'm surprised, although pleasantly, that the Flames waived Lazar and Kulak in favour of rookies. I say it's the right move, I just didn't expect them to do it

Didn't catch it, is Rasmus Andersson still on the roster? Poor Lazar this kid may never achieve all the good things people thought about him.

I always thought Lazar would turn out to be a decent 3rd liner at worst. Shows what I know :D

Yeah both Andersson and Valimaki are still on the NHL roster. Still one dman to cut (unless they carry 8 for some reason) so tomorrow it's likely one of them, or Dalton Prout, are sent down

He still could, maybe. The best thing for him at this point is definitely AHL time so I do hope he clears

Aberg shouldn't be a surprise at all, guy played like he didn't give a ****. No effort at all even with 4 guys fighting for the same spot.

just saw they released Jerabek, I guess Bouchard is staying for at least 9 games. Who took Aberg's spot?

He never had a spot to begin with, the entire rw was open for competition and it seems like this will be what our forward lines look like opening night:

    Nuge - Mcdavid - Rattie
    Lucic - Drai - Yamo
    Rieder/Khaira - Strome - Pulju
    Rieder/Khaira - Brodziak - Kass
    Chaission/Caggiulla

Lias was suprising but it makes sense
It’s not that he hasn’t played well, but it was between him or Chytil that makes the team. We can’t exactly fit both on the team and try and develop a ton of rookies this season (Chytil, Howden, Lettieri, Deangelo, Georgiev, Pionk) it’s better for his development to stay in Hartford 1 more year/come up at the deadline. The only way Lias would’ve made the team was if he beat out Chytil, they didn’t want him playing 4th line. Once this was revealed, I am okay with him starting the year in the AHL, Hartford looks much, much better than recent years

I don't know his stats in pre season but I thought he looked alright, of course Ziba/Spooner/Chytil was a lock but still, I think he's nhl ready.

He’s technically NHL ready as in he’s good enough to play in the league but I’d rather let him develop in Hartford
There’s been many reports of management not wanting to move Lias/Chytil to wing and we already have Zib/Chytil/Hayes so that leaves Lias out

I'm not shocked at all that the Flyers haven't realized Carter Hart is their best goalie

    Sami Niku went down?

That's hard to believe. He looked great in the AHL last year.

I thought Myers would make the Flyers, I thought he looked like a pro vs Boston.

Wolanin losing out to Jaros and Lajoie in Ottawa is shocking.

Despite how glaringly obvious it is. I'm sure they were going to give Hart some AHL time regardless of how good he was in preseason. Fortunately for us he should be up within a month or two with how frequently our goalies get injured.

Kid was pretty much invisible with the exception of the first game against the Devils. He didn't make it because he isn't ready. Chytil might not be ready, but his skill level is significantly higher than Lias'.

    I see.

Surprised Myers didn't beat out one of those bottom 3 guys.

In Hextall's eyes, playing better does not give you a roster spot. If it did, both Myers and Friedman would have made the team.

If Myers made the team, then one of those guys would have to be waived. And Hextall wants to keep the depth and not risk losing one if claimed.

Hakstol has gone on record saying AMac is a top 4 Dman so that's his pet. He isn't getting waived although he would clear. And Hagg/Floun likely both get claimed.

I think Hextall will run with this group and see how the team plays knowing that Myers will get 20-24 minutes in the AHL in all situations. And when an injury occurs, he or Friedman will get recalled.

Side note: one of Weal, Leier, Wesie or Lehtera will be waived/traded as the Flyers still need to cut a forward. Then cut another one once Knight comes back off injury.

Sounds like Connor Carrick will be traded/waived before Wednesday at 12pm.

Looking at it from before camp, that's a bit of a surprise.

He tore his ACL near the end of last season in that crazy 5 OT game between the Phantoms and the Checkers. Will be out for the bulk of this season otherwise he definitely would have made the roster.
He signed a 3 year contract extension in June so Hextall definitely still believes in him.
