OTTAWA - Flyers defenseman Brandon Manning said he expected to be cleared by team doctors Friday and hoped to be available for the matinee Saturday against visiting Chicago.

Thursday's game was the third straight he missed because of an upper-body injury.

"The last few days, I feel a lot better," he said after a one-hour practice session Thursday. In 21 games, Manning has three goals, nine points, and a plus-1 rating.

Meanwhile, goalie Michal Neuvirth and center Sean Couturier are making progress from knee injuries. General manager Ron Hextall said Neuvirth was expected to resume skating Friday.

Neuvirth could return in about two weeks, and Couturier is expected back in late December.

Would REALLY love to see Streit benched for Manning on Saturday.

He is a lock for causing a GA every game.

It's not even so much the defensive issues in our own zone, it's the fact that team's recognize him as a weak link and pressure him at the point.

We've had countless sequences where the team is cycling the puck very well only for Streit to fumble a pass under pressure and create a rush the other way. I just don't trust him to handle the puck.

Count me in on the bench streit wagon. As long as one of Macdonald or streit is out the Flyers are a better team... even if it's only incrementally as I won't be mistaking manning for lidstrom anytime soon.

I don't think they will bench Streit. He's an Assistant Captain, he's a venerated player nearing the end of his career, he carries a lot of respect, and hell, the team uses him as a top 4 d man pretty much all year. That's the bigger issue. Just make him the elder, 3rd pair PP guy he should be, and I have a feeling he'd look a bit better. Not to mention you're ensuring that MacDonald or Schultz is in the lineup, and while AMac's last couple games have been solid, let's not get recency bias with him.

I also don't think scratching him helps when you're trying to trade him in the next couple months. 13 points in 25 games without top PP time is no joke when teams come looking, as they always do, for that 3rd pair PP veteran to put their team over the edge.

Just looked at ES points by D. Streit and Manning BOTH have more points than Weber and Josi. Also are tied with Subban and Suter. And freakin Holden is 4th in the entire league for D ES points!!

I agree that I don't see Streit being scratched. But he can be traded anytime for all I care.

Streit's played all the games so far & is second on the team in average ES minutes. That's just too much to expect a guy of his age (& showing it) to handle at this point. A team looking to acquire him would be doing so to bolster their bottom pair & PP for example. He needs to get the Timonen treatment & basically be turned into a bottom pairing PP specialist.

I'm kind of surprised they essentially gave up on Schultz at this point.

This is a really underrated Beatles song

He is only waiting for his moment to arise.

As for Streit, I noticed something really interesting at the end of the game. Claude was standing there with his hand up, accepting high fives from everyone as they skated off the ice after the OT. He was watching the Jumbotron as he did it and not paying any attention to the players, but when Streit came over he squeezed Streit's fingers and held onto his hand as it dropped, and he looked at him. That sounds more romantic than I meant it to lolz. Anyway, G could have been just fooling around as he got finished watching the screen, or he could have been trying to say something to Streit non-verbally, like "I appreciate you, man" or "Hang in there, man" or ... pretty much anything, man.

I just thought it was interesting. It reminded me that these are human beings that interact on a personal level and not only hockey players that we evaluate from afar. That said, we can't be rid of Streit fast enough for my liking. It just may not be as simple as "He's ****, get rid of him" for the people who make the actual decisions.

Problem is, he's **** on the PP too.

Me, too.

It does make me think they are doing everything they can to make MacDonald a viable trade candidate. Not straight up for a pick, but with retention and/or for another overpaid player.

I am really hoping Hextall can dump AMac @ 50% retained. It is better than a buyout with the cap hit 4-6 seasons out.

Even if they do nothing, with enough ELCs incomming (Lindblom, Myers etc.) they should be ok for the next 3 seasons with him as an extra or at least not buy him out until Provorov and Konecny are up for extensions ahead of his final season.

With Amac, my hoped for scenario is to play him enough games to expose him to the expanion draft and then bribe somehow Vegas to take him.

Ya I think they should either pony up a pick and trade Amac, or ride him out for another year or two.

I'm fine with riding out the contract if that's what needs to happen, but they absolutely cannot continue to put him in the ice... at least the ice in Philadelphia.

Couturier, Read and Streit are listed as possible for the first game after the Christmas break, December 28.

Neuvirth is as follows (Dec. 19):

Neuvirth is finally skating again. Monday was the third time he had gone down into the butterfly since getting hurt. He’s projected to return to the lineup after the calendar turns to 2017.

“No setbacks, but it’s a difficult injury, especially for goalies,” Neuvirth said Sunday after practice. “Can’t rush it back. Stolie and Mase are doing a good job, so there’s no pressure for me to rush it.”

The oft-injured goalie changed his summer workout by strengthening his core — groin pulls had been a common foe for him — in hopes of avoiding further injury.

So far that hasn’t been the case and he’s hoping for a second-half rebound to his season after the same old story for him: injury rehab.
