For the Habs, Loic Lacasse (181st overall), Greg Stewart (246th) and Alex Dulac-Lemelin (278th) are the only ones that need to be signed. I'd guess that only Stewart will be signed.

Canes will likely sign Justin Peters (G, 2nd round, 39), Brett Carson (D, 4th round, 109) and Ryan Pottruff (D, 7th round, 202). Magnus Akerlund is a possibility and I'd like to see them bring Casey Borer into the system, although he still has one more year of NCAA eligability that they will probably let him play out. Our minor league system is so depleted that we can't afford not to give these guys a shot.

The deadline for 2004 drafted prospects is June 1st.

How many players from each team are still to be signed, and do you think they will be signed by the June 1st cutoff?
That should be "2003 and earlier" from what I understand - I think the new CBA gives 3 years to sign players from the '04 draft because there was no 2004-05 season, meaning the '05-06 season counts as Year 1 and 2006-07 would be Year 2. I have a list of the Blues prospects and the dates they have to be signed by, and even guys like Barulin and Aaltonen who were '03 draft picks supposedly don't have to be signed until June 1, 2007.

:dunno: But I'm pretty sure that the deadline for '04 picks isn't in 21 days or so.

Your mixing up Euro's and CHLers. June 1st is for the '04 guys drafted out of the CHL and CHL only. The '04 Euro picks don't need to be signed till the summer of '08, it's '02 this year, '03 in '07 and the final '04 guys in '08.

That wasn't made clear in the opening post of the thread.

some teams still need coaches and gm's.. do teams usually sign players if there is no gm hired by the team.. if so what happens to the players that have yet to sign and the team has not made a move to fill the big cheese's seat.

Someone is minding the shop. The Bruins have signed some of their prospects with their assistant GM Jeff Gorton handling the talks. If the Islanders don't have a GM by the draft, their chief scout Tony Feltrin will run their draft.Mike Milbury is still around ;)

Hawks unsigned CHL'ers from 2004..

Adam Berti, Bryan Bickell, David Bolland, Troy Brouwer, Ryan Garlock, Trevor Kell and Mitch Maunu.

Cam Barker's already signed and the rights to Jared Walker and Eric Hunter were given up last year.

Non CHL'ers to be signed or let go by June 1st..

Adam Burish, Teemu Jaaskelainen, Kevin Kantee, Oli Malmivaara, Jonas Nordquist, Jari Viuhkola and Mattias Wennerberg.

There are about 3 or 4 with no chance of been signed, so that leaves about 10 players fighting for about 7 spots (Judging by what Hawks officials - Bowman and Tallon - said on Hawkcast).

Washington Capitals: For the CHL guys, the only unsigned 2004 draft pick for the Caps is Clayton Barthel, round 3, #88; most speculation I have seen, including mine, is that they will not sign him.

The '02 and earlier European draft pick rights (except for the Russian players according to some info) also expire on June 1, the player mentioned the most is Johnny Oduya, round 7 #221, 2001 draft.

Yeah, Steber's signed I believe. Unless he was signed to a tryout by the Marlies.
I think he played in the ECHL for Toronto's affiliate.

Euros also need to be signed under the new CBA, but if Kyle Woodlief is right then there is a one year exception for players playing in Russia, ie. Vorobiev and Semenov.

Steber is in the system, as has already been said. I think his contract might be with the Marlies rather than the Leafs- not at all sure about that though.

Norton is in the NCAA and not a factor for a while yet.

Here's what was reported on a Caps Report podcast during the season in response to my question to the draft right expiration for non-CHL draft picks(source: Caps media staff/writer, etc., as told to them by someone in hockey operations)

European draft picks need to be signed by:

Drafted in or prior to June 2002: June 1, 2006

Drafted 2003: June 1, 2007

Drafted 2004: June 1, 2008

Drafted 2005: June 1, 2007

Drafted 2006: June 1, 2008

Russian players: not the same because Russia has not signed the IIHF transfer agreement

Also, College Players: August 15 year they graduate or August 15 of what would have been their graduating year

I think it is a little strange that they have longer to sign the 04 European draft picks than the 05 picks, but that has to do with pre vs post new CBA timing

Interesting info. The dates for 2004 and 2003 conflict with what I have read in other places, but in the NNHL (Non-communicative NHL) that should be no surprise. I guess I officially don't know what's going on, but I certainly take your post seriously, and will lean toward your explanation until I hear something else. :)

I understand about conflicting reports, I'm just working with what I have been told until I see something more concrete reported elsewhere; one thing that seems consistent is that the expiring rights on June 1, 2006 are for 2004 CHL draft picks and for 2002 and earlier European draft picks, except Russian players.

That is correct, but do you what the deal is with the Russian prospects and how long their rights can be retained? (If it is now different from other Euro prospects).
