He coached Keith Tkachuk during his final season in St Louis. He also coached David Backes for a few seasons and was an assistant in LA and coaches Milan Lucic. Considering that the Sens might be looking to add veterans and Backes and Lucic might be options it is interesting to see the connection from coaching.

Overall I don't know much about him but he worked for multiple seasons as an assistant under Sutter and was there during there 2nd cup win. That experience is positive

DJ said he wanted someone who could run a powerplay .. Is Payne that guy?

I really think more than a PP specialist we need a breakout specialist .. that can cut down on the icing , or the 2 minutes of running around followed by a desperate exit that allows for a change ; rince repeat... Our Dzone has been horrible. So much of the game comes from there. Powerplays are usually more abundant when you play in the other team's end.

An assistant coach with a cup is good I suppose. I'd have preferred a head coach with a cup AS head coach.

Maybe he’s better as an assistant coach. He seemed too much of an X and O coach and not a leader. Also we had a young team and didn’t seem to work with the young players well. But who knows maybe I am completely off on that.
Our other coaches are both. Supposed to be good with kids. We need an x and o guy.

Payne is a PP guy as runs the forwards. I assume that's what he'll continue to do here.

Agree 100% about breakout specialists. Zone entries too (both defending and attacking).

Transitioning the puck from the D to the breakout should be much improved with Brannstrom, Wolanin, Zaitsev(?) and Chabot as full timers.

I'm fine with Payne until he gives me reason not to be.

Known as a PP guy, and a heavy X's and O's guy who loves to read and react to the other team's strategy. Always prepared (sometimes even overprepared) with info about every opponent, and strategies to counteract them.

I like it. No idea how he was in Buffalo under Housley, but was very effective in LA under Sutter.

The time with the Sabres seems like a bit of a blemish, but can't argue with this hire as of now. We needed an X's and O's guy to work on the PP and with the forwards and we got one that has past NHL head coaching experience.

Little bit worrisome if he has an issue working with young players given the amount of youth that's about to be injected onto this roster, but with DJ and Cap around to take the lead on that he might be a great fit (I'm sure his time with the Sabres young roster helped him learn from his past mistakes as well).
