6'1" 190, hardly smallish. He is a relentless puck hound too. He won't smash anyone, true, but emotionless? Not every guy has to have a tantrum and spear and slash opponents when he's upset, or throw milkcrates for crying out loud. For most of us here, if we showed the kind of "emotion" at our jobs that people seem to think hockey players should, we'd be fired.

Conversely...when players in the NHL don't show any emotion and are as soft as he is, they tend to lose theirs.

I don't see the puck-hound that you do....I see a guy who waits around far too much, with little results.

Can’t help but look at his point totals from college until now. He’s produced at a good clip until this year. Too bad he has to play with Backes, that won’t help him out of his slump.

my favorite example as a heinen supporter.. last night.. puck goes back into flyers zone. he "hounds" the puck gets it against the wall, wins the battle , then with two flyers attacking him he sauces a pass to the middle of the ice which backes cant do anything but take a semi hard shot with no one around him , right to the chest of the goalie.. im sorry heinen is just a whipping boy now.. he is extremely crafty and is always in good position . instead of bashing him why doesnt his coach try to pump him up !?

People think he's a puck hound because he takes good angles and has a good stick.

Unfortunately he doesn't get there in time more than half the time and doesn't actually win the puck back. All that puck chasing with no actual results.

Here we go again.

Doesn’t face-wash a guy or bang on the glass? Must be soft and not care?

This is the epitome of the “lazy take”.

As far as “waits around far too much” goes, I’m not seeing what you do at all. Especially when the guy is the F1 on the forecheck more often than not.

This is the dumbest thing. 'Plays like he cares' because he looks like he is given more effort is the most superficial thing you can say.

It’s the same bull**** statement people tried to use to disparage Loui and Krejci.

You can’t possibly know how much Heinen cares or not.

How is it bullshit?

Loui Eriksson sucked ass here.

Krejci looks like he cares sometimes and has times when he doesn't look like he cares. The times when he looks like he cares is directly correlated to the times he is producing, and vice versa. People don't just imagine this stuff.

I like Heinen and think he will be successful. However, he needs an extended vacation to the press box to hopefully freshen up his mind a bit and kick him into gear.

What's lazy is simply assuming a guy is doing things he's not because he's not doing anything productive, just because you like him or because he did it for a few months in 2018.

I don't need facewashes....I'd just like to see actual effort, maybe mix in some production for a change.

9 points in 36 games!

Nine.

Defending this guy is beyond absurd at this point.

In that same span, Lucic, who is by all accounts --- useless, done, a has been, finished, etc. has 8 points and for the year one less point than Heinen.

The ever-useless Ryan Reaves has 11.

Perennial all-star Frank Vatrano has 22, otherwise known as the same amount of points Heinen is projected to have in this entire season.

Imagine the frustration the guys who have been saddled with him as a line mate have watching him shoot perfect feeds into the back glass, or like last night, flub them entirely.

I watched him closely at the game last night and thought he was very good - better than good.

He was not playing well early on and that seems to be where people are at.

The team overall left their legs on the beaches they visited during their break

Pastrnak
Heinen
Krug

Did not

I thought Heinen had 2 good shifts... in the third.

Saw nothing but turnovers and laziness until that point.

It's bullshit because, exactly as Pia said, you have no actual way of knowing how much a guy cares or not. Assuming you do is ridiculous.

You're arguing two different points though, Sarge. Yes Heinen isn't producing points, but that's a very different thing from calling him soft and no effort. One is true, and I don't think the other one is.

Apparently, hockey players need to skate around looking like this all the time, to let people know they really care and are really trying.

I really, honestly do not see the effort others see....certainly not to the degree necessary to mitigate his lack of production and justify his role. I mean every guy in the NHL gives some effort -- but when I see Wagner and Kuraly I see effort, I see DeBrusk - effort - Grizz, Krug --- all noticeable because of their effort and energy. Even McAvoy, who I feel has been playing poorly for a while now looks to be playing hard.

Heinen, I see very little.

The missed shot sucked, but I felt Heinen was definitely one of the best forwards last night. I get the hate over his lack of scoring since he def has been lacking in that Dept, but otherwise he competes hard and does a lot of things really well. I'm still not ready to give up on him.

I thought he was very good but I had an advantage being there and able to watch away from camera

I was too and really felt entirely opposite.

My friend said to me at one point something like;

I'm not expecting anything good to happen when Heinen's out there anymore...I just hope nothing really bad happens.

I saw turnovers, losing puck battles and failure to score into an empty net that most 10 year olds could have done.

I'm probably on the middle end of the two extremes. He does a lot of good things without the puck and he absolutely is a good forechecker, even though he doesn't throw big hits when he's the first guy in.

BUT he needs to start producing. We can only hold so many guys underperforming at one time on the roster. He, Debrusk, and Backes really need to start putting some points up. Working hard is a nice little moral victory but please for the love of god someone not on the 1st line (besides Krejci) do something!
