I was wondering when Gragnani would be given a shot. Don't understand sending Nodl down though. Should have been Welsh.

If Jordan goes, doesn't that mean Murphy has to go?

no. he goes back when one of the injured defensemen comes back. jordan was swapped 1 for 1 with Gragnani. he wasnt sent back because an injured player came back. when one DOES come back, yes Murphy will be the first to go back by rule. of course, he can only play 5 games up or he burns the first year of his contract, so he will probably go back down soon and someone else get called up from Charlotte if someone doesnt get healthy soon.

How is Murf an emergency call up then if Jordan could play for one of the injured guys? Is it because that would short Charlotte?

gleason, pitkanen, mcbain all out with injury. our 7th defenseman playing in one slot, jordan an emergency callup for the 2nd, murphy an extreme-emergency callup for the 3rd.......jordan is allowed to be switched out. but no matter who he was brought up to replace in the lineup, Murphy is first to go back because he came up form the OHL in an extenuating circumstance.

Sounded like Tripp & John knew this was coming last night. They under the table hinted something was brewing with Dalpe getting a call-up when discussing his recent blazing hot play down in Charlotte.

Solid play of Wallace kind of makes Nodl expendable, although I agree with others, why not send Welsh down instead?

If Dalpe has his stuff together he could help that little bit of offense that was simmering on the third line about a week ago when all the injuries hit.

At the expense of losing Rask or a first is what I mean. :(

I'm just a little biased on Dalpe, he is my favorite Cane. And right now I would rather see this defense situation fixed more than our offense anyway. I think once our injured guys come back our offense will be fine without ROR. But its just my opinion :)

I don't think the rules for an "emergency callup" from juniors are as strict as you guys are making it out to be. It's mostly a courtesy to the CHL, so they won't have players yo-yo-ing up and down like the AHL. If the Canes need Murphy due to injury, they can use him. I don't think you have to demonstrate that you have no other healthy options anywhere in the organization.

That's true. Although while addressing a big need, our defense on the forecheck will be superb with O'Reilly. I'm actually willing to sacrifice a little defense for ROR. I do think that Dalpe will shine in these upcoming games with Skinner out.

CBA question for those who like to read legal documents for fun: Is the 20-year-old age limit in the AHL based on birthday, or the "season" we're in.

For instance, this is Ryan Murphy's age 19 season, but he'll be 20 on 3/31. Can he go to Charlotte on his 20th birthday?

That would be an incorrect assumption, to the best of my knowledge. The rules are strict and highly adhered to. The minute that Gleason or Pitkanen are ready to come off the IR, Murphy goes immediately back down. To my understanding, teams have to prove that they've suffered damage to their six designated top defenders that cannot be replaced without gutting the AHL team. 3 of those 6 are injured for us in McBain, Gleason, and Pitkanen. Without calling up 3 guys from the AHL, we'd be strapped to field a full unit. As soon as ANY one of those guys are ready to play, the extra body we were granted in Murphy by rule has to go back immediately.

Almost positive the rule is completion of four seasons of Major Junior and the age thing isn't as highly enforced. I could be mistaken. Murphy is at the end of his 4th season in the OHL and thereby can play as soon as Kitchener's season has ended but not before. If a player for whatever reason never plays 4 season of Junior, I think the cut off date is the same for the draft in determining a player's "playing year", which is like September if memory serves me.

I don't get why Nodl can't stick in the NHL. He very rarely has a bad game and there's some grit and skill there.

Don't mind him at all on the roster.

We're just gonna have to agree to disagree on this one, based on semantics. I mean, if the rule is "strict and high adhered to," then what is the rule? Where is it in the CBA? Can you quote the "rule" for us?

Secondly, "without gutting the AHL team" is highly subjective. Bring some guys up from the ECHL. Or are we now worried about gutting the ECHL team.

The entire thing seems very subjective to me, which is why I don't think there's an actual "rule" in place here. I think it's more of a guideline and courtesy, and based on the fact that nobody knows of any "rule," I feel pretty safe in my understanding.

It's completely mind-bending to me that we're dressing the likes of Westgarth and Welsh over Nodl. And I don't even think all that highly of Nodl. But at least he's a legit NHL player. Scratching him is one thing, but sending him down?

It's not a CBA issue, but the agreement between the NHL and the CHL allows emergency recalls to occur when the NHL team is at the third emergency recall level, which was our case when Murphy was emergency recalled.

I remember that Forslund or someone like that referenced the "third strike" aspect of the situation in their explanation as to how Murphy could be recalled, and I can see article references to the rule, but cannot find the text of the NHL/CHL agreement for a specific citation.
