Keep in mind that we're going to get dinged pretty bad with overages. That column won't be zero, it will probably be closer to $3 million (and theroretically as much as $5.5).

Since Dallas had no cap space this year, preformance bonuses carry over to next year. We still owe Perry $1.5 million (could be as much as $1.75 depending on playoffs) and Sekera $300k due to games played bonuses. Heiskanen almost certainly reached his schedule A bonus of 850k just like last year (it could be as much as $2.5 million if he managed to reach all his schedule B bonuses though that's unlikely). Gurianov could also make up to an additinal 850k, but his contract details aren't public.

Don't see any of those contacts other than maybe Faksa happening.
Also if Robertson isn't playing top 6 he might as well stay in cedar Park he's not a grinder and serves no purpose on the 3rd line or what will likely be a horrible 4th line
We'll probably see something like what we rolled with this year. With young players slotting in for the ufas

Robertson-Seguin-Radulov
Benn-Hintz-Pavelski/Gurianov
Kiviranta-Faksa/Dickinson-Comeau
Superscrub-Dowling/Dickinson-Gurianov/Pavelski.

But hopefully with a quality coach this time but I won't get my hopes with Nill likely returning.

We really need to get out of that Cogliano contract but I don't think another GM is dumb enough to think he's a value add.

Where is their obligatory 7th and 8th D man?

I get the feeling they like Ty D better than Jason Robertson, and he has a better chance of coming up early. Just a guess. Besides, they seem to have little use for pure goal scorers, preferring multitasking grinders, which is more TyD style.

No doubt, however, that cap management issues signal the end of using all vets to fill grinder roles. Probably long overdue.

Depends on who the coach is. In a grinder role yes Dellandrea would make more sense, but the team isnt going to have trouble stopping goals unless bishop falls off a cliff.

As for the 7th/8th Dman idk.
Lindell-Klingberg
Heiskanen
Are the only 3 I'd count on to be on the roster opening night.
Oleksiak were probably stuck with too(not that's he's terrible just overpaid)
Harley I'd like to see get a shot but depends on who is the HC. Bones f*** no, keep him far away .
Something like
Lindell-Klingberg
Harley-Heiskanen
Oleksiak-johns
Fedun

With some ahler the 8th let's say Joe c.

Other than getting rid of Cogliano, not sure that does much more than rearrange the deck chairs.

Not sure if adding a consistent 30 goal scoring center counts as rearranging deck chairs.

I don't see the Flames taking the bait on that trade though.

So per Friedman performance bonus overages from this season can be spread 50/50 over the next two seasons so that could give the Stars a bit more wiggle room

Brock Boeser is in the rumor mill; he's the guy you go after if you want to score more goals.
You'd have to think Benning would be looking youngish D in return? Boeser is the calibre of player who could make Harley available I would think. Alternatively, if you're completly sold on Harley, Lindell for Boeser would be a fun trade foundation I could see Benning not taking total offense to.

I don't see Vancouver and Dallas making a trade that significant. Especially after the Hamhuis fiasco and given the bad blood between the owners

I could see them going fairly budget with how COVID has affected Gaglardi's businesses and just use internal youth options:

Lines are just whatever popped into my head:

Benn-Seguin-Pavelski
Gurianov-Hintz-Radulov
Dellandrea-Faksa-Comeau
Robertson-Dickinson-Cogliano
Dowling - Kiviranta

Lindell-Klingberg
Heiskanen-Johns
Oleksiak-Harley
Fedun

Bishop
Bow (hopefully Khudobin)

You don't think they'll do anything more significant than re-sign the rfas and let the ufas walk(save maybe Khudobin)

I mean in an ideal world they would trade Cogliano and get an improvement for the top 9, but I just think there's a real possibility they will have to be very cost effective for a year or two. I also think the lineup I put could still be a very competitive playoff team, just depends on who is coaching :)

Other teams aren't in any better financial position. I imagine they'll have a very hard time finding a taker for Cogliano so if money is too tight keeping the RFAs and Dobby may be the best they can do.

I fully expect that we'll see them make some significant moves.
I'd hope they put a package together for nylander or Tyler johnson.
His cap hit is 5mil but his actual pay next season is 3 something.
Nylanders pay also drops down next season vs his cap hit.
Toronto and Tampa will both need space to fill out their defenses/ pay raise to sergachev/chirelli.
With limited space (4.5 mil currently)
You flip a cheap cost controlled asset,
Say Dickinson, a pick/ prospect (for Johnson)
You take on very little additional money for the year. But get quite a bit better.

Depending on Gurianovs contract, you can maybe package him with johns as a focal point for nylander. (obviously other components would need to be involved as well)
Nylanders bonus was already paid so his actually salary is only 2.5mil or so.
And torontos Rd going into next year are Justin Holl and maybe liljegrin

If all Nill does is re-sign the rfas and bring in/retain a backup goalie its an endictment of how badly his time with the team needs to end

I don’t see them trading away Johns after all he did to work his way back and now that the team has a solid top 4 for the first time since, i don’t even know, since Niinimaa left?

Also Guri just turned the corner and put up 20 in the shorty season, sort of would like to see if he can pick up a few more apples as he gets used to the NHL game and hopefully keep the chemistry with Hintz.

Also the difference between 25-25 and 35-30 player isn’t Johns. But who knows, maybe this was a lucky season for Nylander and he goes back to scoring 20-40. Maybe DG can pot 30 per or even more. Or he could fall off and score 15-15 Nichushkin style:laugh: But maybe nyt worth the top 4 dman Johns seems to still be.

just my 2¢

The only scenario that trading Johns makes sense is if he will be lost to expansion, which I suppose is possible. Then, you expose Jamie O, and some pups, but of course, you have to count on Harley stepping up.

You would only trade Guri if you somehow knew he has peaked and pawn him off on an unsuspecting team. Losing those two for a one replacement who may only be 5-10 goals better doesn't seem like a great trade for the Stars.

I've been advocating for Nylander since he re-signed with Toronto and the writing was on the wall they will likely need to move him.

While I don't care for his penchant to be waaay overly fancy at times (looks like Patrick Kane but less successful at it) and he does disappear for stretches, his high skill level and creativity is exactly what the Stars need.

If there was no cap constraints you're telling me you wouldn't trade the 23yr old gurianov with 1 season of nhl experience for 24yr Nylander with several? Because of "Gurianov" potential? The guy that has more goals than Gurianov has points and is only 1yr older signed long term isn't worth trading him for?

Johns would likely be lost to expansion depending on his health. As he would be the best player exposed from Dallas currently although he's not some irreplaceable component.

I don't see how anyone can think that a player that has thus far shown he can't create without his speed is going to suddenly become something amazing.
He's fast and has a good shot. He'll pick up a decent amount of points and goals dependant on he doesn't lose his footspeed in some freak injury but he doesn't have much else in his toolbox.

Going into next season, this is what I would try to do...

To DAL: Killorn
To MTL: Cogliano and DAL 1st 2020
To TB: MTL 2nd 2020 and STL 2nd 2020

Then, you flip Faksa and Honka to Edmonton for Puljujarvi and EDM 5th 2020

Re-sign Gurianov, Hintz, Puljujarvi
Re-sign Khudobin (or sign Howard/Dell/Brossoit) - try to get Oettinger 5-10 games

Benn-Seguin-Gurianov
Robertson-Hintz-Radulov
Killorn-Pavelski-Puljujarvi
Dellandrea-Dickinson-Comeau
Dowling

Lindell-Klingberg
Heiskanen-Johns
Oleksiak-Harley
Fedun

Bishop
Khudobin

Similar team to last year with a good mix of youth and experience

Thoughts?
