Honestly - I never want to see this man put on a Bluenote again in his life. He's under replacement level and does nothing well other then be big.

Did you actually watch any games he played in? If you did in fact then at least I know to never take your opinion seriously....

He was a very serviceable, responsible 4th line center, strong defensive plays and excellent board work. Do you expect 4th line players to dangle the puck and snipe top shelf?

He made a great first impression but as the season went on he was barely passable IMO. Good on the faceoff dot, but just couldn't keep up with the speed of legit NHL players. It was a nice story and he seems like a fantastic kid...not mad at this signing at all!

But as a hockey player, something has gone very wrong if Joshua is in your NHL lineup.

Big guy who plays big, has heart and is developing. Hell yes he can stay!

Team was banged up to f-k last year, I’d take a lot of his ‘shortcomings’ with a grain of salt. I love what I see so far!

Ah yes the ever popular "Do you even watch bro?" strawman.

Joshua seems like a good person. His first game was inspirational. He's a terrible hockey player though. His possession metrics were awful, so I'm going to disagree that he was strong defensively and had excellent board work. His one NHL level skill is faceoffs, and that's not enough.

If he sniffs the NHL roster something has gone horribly wrong.

After his first game of two he was pretty terrible. Fine as the 14th/15th forward, but I really hope we don’t see him very often this year.

Right, he had the Nathan Walker classic experience - come in for a game or two, have tons of adrenaline, make some good things happen......then lose that little bit of extra and sink to below replacement level.

What is replacement level?

Wouldn’t Joshua be the classic injury replacement?

Solid 4th line players, like Barbashev, are not at replacement level.

Guys like Poganski and Joshua and MacMac are replacement-level players.

You forgot he had really impressive FO% 57.8%

St. Louis Blues- Face-off stats - 2020 - Puckbase

Yes it's small sample size, but damn. Imagine him training with ROR and improve his faceoff skills. + His size. Monster for guy who can play PK minutes too. I love specialistic guys like that. Play physical, grind, monster st FO and PK top notch.

Barbashev is quite literally the definition of a replacement level player.

I believe in Joshua. Get him training time with ROR and Perron and watch him soar. Kids got heart and uses his size, which is something this team desperately needs.

How do you qualify or quantify “replacement-level” player?

GSVA - it's basically like WAR for baseball, but the numbers are lower. An amazing season for a baseball player is usually around 9-10 wins, for hockey an amazing season is like 4-5 for a forward and like 2.5-3 for a D-man.

For example - Sundqvist is projected as a .4 win player, which according to the model puts him solidly in 3L territory. This is from the Athletic at the beginning of the year:

Now remember, this is from the beginning of the year, and takes into account the previous three seasons to provide a prediction. So that's our year before the Cup (Missed the playoffs in the final game against the Avs), the Cup year, and the year we were top of the League until the shutdown.

Obviously this picture is pretty rosy compared to the way the season shook out. By the time the season was over, Barbashev was considered a .16 GSVA player. Here are the people closest to him:

A player with a 0.0 value for last season would be Antoine Roussel.

So yes, Barbashev is -slightly- above replacement level for last year , but not by much.

Per The Athletic’s model, Barbashev is considered a replacement-level player. Hmmm....interesting. Thanks
