Salary Cap: Dadonov and Hoffman's future in Florida?

Do the Panthers re-sign both, neither or just one of the two?

  • Both (trade on D to clear some cap)

  • Dadonov

  • Hoffman

  • None

I don't think we can afford to lose Hoffman next season. With him and Dadonov hitting UFA, we're most likely only going to be able to retain one (if any).

What are your thoughts, do we resign him? If so, what do you think the contract would look like?

If I was DT I would let Dadonov walk - and my assumption is Hoffman would end up around 5 years at ~8mm

Ya some of the comparable deals would be Pacioretty ($7 million x 4yrs) or JVR ($7 million x 5yrs).
With some inflation/cap increase ahead with SEA, Hoffman could definitely fall somewhere in the $7.25 to $8 million range. 4 years would be ideal as Barkov and Huberdeau's deal end around that time frame.
Hopefully we can make the playoffs and give him the sense of a bright future for the next 4-5 years.

He's been fairly healthy his whole career as he's only missed 15 games in the last 5 years, will be 30 in November.
Still say it's easier to replace Dadonov (Hepo/Denisenko/Noel) than Hoffman (Tippett).

Was just playing around with the Armchair GM tool on CapFriendly. I don't see how we can go into next season without moving some money.

Scott Darling's buyout eats 2.3m of our cap next year... Add Luongo's recapture penalty and demers retained salary and we have nearly 4mm tied up next year in non-rostered players.

We have $17.8 million in projected cap space end of 2019-2020. Add another cap increase of $1.2 to 2 million and we jump up to $19-20 million. Move Sceviour in off-season, frees up another $1.2 million

Monty, Brown, Weegar, Borgstrom. Hunt, Hawk and Malgin are the key RFA's.

Only see Monty, Weegar, Borgstrom and maybe one or two of Brown, Hawk or Hunt re-signed. Don't see Malgin here next year with Tippett closing in.
That's $5-7 million total depending on Borg's deal/year. Leaving at least $12 million so unless both Dadonov and Hoff sign for $6 million each, only one makes sense.

But we also have McCoshen, Keeper, Schemitsch, Greco, Repo and Toninato needing new deals.
How many of those guys do we re-sign and how many actually make the big club?

If we do move a D, who would it be if you're Tallon?

Hoff is going to demand at least 8M long term. Are we going to pay that? We cannot keep him, Huby, Barky, and Tro all long term. One has to go. I'd like to keep all but don't know if that's possible.

Yeah. But it does seem that Hoff is more consistent scorer, he's been scoring on the PP the day he got here. Dads goes streaking although he is a better all around player.

But if either one is taking a pay cut I'd assume that guy gets signed. As a cap team, any additional cap is huge.

I keep him over anyone who ain't Barkov or a goalie tbh

I would keep him over Tro, I just wanted to see if anyone else agreed. This is assuming Borgstrom keeps developing.

If Tro doesn't mesh with linemates this year I wouldn't be upset if he was moved.

It's getting a little old seeing him charge up ice and either try to split the defense or skate wide and circle the net.

If he doesn't learn to use his linemates he needs to be moved, IMO. Trade for picks/prospects.

Trade for picks/prospects? You want to trade this team’s 2C for futures when we’re trying to win now?

If Troch is going to get shipped out we need a roster player in return.

Moving Tro would be for cap reasons. Getting a roster player back would defeat the purpose!

Let's see if he remains a 2C, he may be the 3C soon enough of they can't get him to mesh with his linemates.

Honestly I’d like to keep both, but we might be depending on Tippett and Borgy to replace one of them.
Let Pysyk walk, maybe try to trade Matheson? It’s hard to realistically imagine keeping both Dads and Hoff.

If he doesn't mesh with his linemates, then change the style of his line mates.

He needs line mates that will get themselves open and be on the same page.

at his cap hit, trocheck will very likely stay. hopefully he bounces back to form. if not, then hopefully borg can take a big enough step to get larger minutes and play him with hoffman and vatrano skilled types, trocheck can get connolly and hawryluk types.

Yeah but Tro is gonna get a considerable raise on his next contract.

There is no point of trading Tro (like Tallon would ever trade him lol) when he's making 4.5. Even if Borg passes him in a couple of years and becomes the better player, paying a 3C 4.5 million is completely fine and just gives us amazing center depth.

It's a long season but until someone like Tippett shows he can score regularly in this league I think they have to keep Hoffman.

His presence on the PP is huge.

Like from below average to top 10.

I would be stoked if they could get a 3-4 year deal done

Maybe he will even take a discount. Could look at some Lightning players with comparable bridge contracts

I’m not sure why Hoffman would even want to leave here. He’s a key cog on the powerplay, he’s putting up career-best numbers, he’s in a small market where his every move isn’t being microanalyzed by the media and he’s living in beautiful South Florida. It’s a win-win for him. I think there will be a deal to get done that works for both sides.

I don't think he desires to be somewhere else but that certainly doesn't mean that he letting that affect the contract extension negotiations. He probably acknowledges at this point that he's a PP specialist and he can't expect to demand the very top dollar for his services and thus he can't demand above $8mil per even if he scores like +40 goals this season.

He’s NOT just a “power play specialist”. He’s a good hockey player who happens to excel on PP. I’m sick of these false accusations.

I'm sick of you being sick. Didn't say he's JUST a PP specialist. When you're #7 in PP points and yet do not crack the top100 in even strength points category then you will assume a certain role.

You’re looking at it wrong.

What rank is Hoff in even strength points? There are 31 teams. On the average, being top-93 is being top-3 on a given team. Being top-124 is top-4 on a team, and top-155 is top-5. Those are all still GOOD (first and second line) players.

It’s quite likely that even with your ranking, Hoff is GOOD 5-on-5 and SUPERIOR on PP. (Like I said, huh.)
