Made a thread about this last year but feel this will be a talking point all year long.
Curious if there is a difference of opinion since December 2018.
We are projected to have just under $18 million in cap space by end of 2019-2020, that's not taking into account a slight cap increase as well. Probably closer to $19-20 million if we get a similar cap increase.

Borgstrom, Weegar, Malgin, Hawryluk, McCoshen, Brown and Montembeault are the RFA's to re-sign next year. How much do we expect to pay for 4-5 of these guys? $6-8 million?

Curious which path management will go with Borgstrom?
Does he get bridged to wait for cap increase/dead money off the books or do we lock him up now on a 5-6 year deal?
Don't see Weegar, Hawryluk and Montembeault getting too much of a pay increase, Brown will have to be even better this year to stick around.
Malgin and McCoshen are iffy to be re-signed/qualified.

The complication to re-sign both Dadonov and Hoffman comes with over-spending on D (feel we're losing a good $3-4 million here) and the new deals of Barkov, Trocheck and Huberdeau needed in 3-4 years time.
We all know what Dadonov and Hoffman bring to the table, both need new deals the end of this year.

Can we realistically sign both with all the ELC forwards coming through over the next few years?
Would Matheson or Yandle be moved for a cheaper shutdown LD to fit both of Dadonov and Hoffman?
If only one will be re-signed, who do you feel it is?

The hope is daddy resigns at a similar 4mil/yr. Hoffman will be tricky cause he’ll undoubtedly want a pay increase. Hope the rfa re-signings come cheap to keep both players around cause they both play important roles.

I'd prob hold Hoffman if we have to pick just one (which I suspect we will). He's too important to our pp and has a sniper mentality that our team lacks. He really rounds out our forward group in that way.

However, if Tippett really comes on and truly looks like he has the potential to be that same type of player, it'd make sense to let Hoffman walk and keep Dads

Only Borgstrom and Montembeault will get decent bridge deals and the rest of 'em are trade fodder if they won't accept bare minimum, ofc unless they do spectacularly well in this upcoming season. Borg should get a two year bridge deal which would line him up with the other centers i.e. Barkov, Troch and Acciaria in the cap table. Also Stralman's contract expires at the same time so that additional $5.5mil freed up. Probably something like $1.25milx2 for Borg and $1milx2 for Monty, league minimums and max 900k contracts all around for the rest. Which means that Weegar and Malgin are probably traded and guys like Stillman and Ang gets the call for full time NHL duty. This kind of arrangement would enable paying $7mil for both Hoff and Dads each.

I’d prefer hoff but they’ll retain dads instead. He plays on the top line with Barkov and huberdeau, they’ll view him as more versatile, and they’ll see hoff as more of a pp specialist. No way dadonov signs for the same amount. He had 65pt, 70pt last year, if he gets 65-70pt again then he’ll be looking at 7+ per. Losing hoffman, despite dadonov’s raise, saves us a couple mil, use that and hopefully dump matheson to get a new top-4 D.

I don't think there's any way we're able to keep both. Daddy should get easily six million on the open market if not seven- Jimmy Hayes got that. Hoffman probably can demand 7.5-8 million.

Who they decide to keep probably comes down to playoff performance. I'd say Daddy has the inside track atm because of his history with the team.

If this was the case then Dadonov's point totals wouldn't have a 26pts gap in comparison to that of Barkov.

Its pretty obvious the chemistry all three have. They each know where the other is going to be for the most part. Dadonov did only play 65% of his 5-0n-5 play with Barkov, so that could be a reason why his point total is less.

I look to the Pacioretty deal for both Hoff and Dadonov. 4 yrs x $7 million. Front end load it to make them tradeable in 2-3 years before Barkov etc need their deals.

I agree with those 2 getting noticeable promotions along with one of Hawryluk and/or Brown being re-signed. Keeper and Schemitsch will keep Brown honest and working hard.

Think Borgstrom will get closer to $2 to $2.5 million if he hits 30-35pts this year. $3 to 3.5M if it's a long term deal. Sceviour will be gone this year or next. Another $1.2 million shaved.

You wouldn't want to see a Stillman - Weegar 3rd pairing next year? Weegar has been great and want him here as long as possible, that could be a nice shutdown duo. Weegar or Vatrano are potential expansion loses but both need to be here the next 2 years imo.

Borgstrom probably should get like 40pts this season but the thing is that Dale should get Borg signed in the middle of the season. McCann got a similar deal a year ago so maybe they'll use that as a measuring stick here. A long term deal doesn't make sense from Borg's point of view since he really doesn't have a lot of evidence to back up a $3mil per contract so far.

Weegar wants a +$2mil per deal after this season and that'd be a fair price for an experienced bottom pairing dman but the Cats probably can't afford it. The benefits of having $3mil in dead weight with buyouts and retained salary. Boils down to choosing between Hoff+Dads vs. Weegar+misc bottom6 fwds/bottom pairing dmen.

Underestimating your boy Dalè.
He gave out that big deal to Matheson and I'd view his value then right around what Borgstrom's is now.

Borg will be 23 by next year so a long term makes sense to buy up the majority of his prime years and over pay a bit of risk/reward now. Still feel Trocheck wont be back when his deal is up.
I'd be content with Barkov and Borgstrom as our long term top 6 C's.

That's a fair point about Weegar but he's one of the more important RFAs and some worry will be had with Stralman who may need some nights off where Weegs steps in.
Every penny will count next year.

If Weegar isnt in long term plans, you move Pysyk now to get Weegar more looks/TOI to hopefully raise his trade value during the year.

I liked to keep both at the Best.

But Hofmann has something that no one else have in this Team. Its the Shooting technique. All of the sharp shooter and Sniper has the same shooting methods. And for me that was something Hoffmann worked in his Offseason.
Same is with the Line chemistry HBD have nothing you can build tomorrow again.

But PP is for us more important.

They didn’t play together all season. Boughner shifted Dads around a few times. Also, chemistry doesn’t necessarily mean a player is going to have the same point totals as someone on their line, that makes no sense. James Neal and Connor McDavid could have chemistry, doesn’t mean Neal is putting up 100+ pts.

One of the two. Likely Dads. I want Hoffman slightly more if it’s 2-4 yr extension type deal.
Dads works so well on that top line, but who is to say Borgstrom or Denisenko type can’t do the same for fraction of the cost during the win now 3-5 year window starting next season.
Losing Hoffman will be hard to replace. Fans will regret it AFTER the fact.

Well, Borg was an overager when he was drafted and so far hasn't proven himself at the NHL level so far so I'd reckon that a long term contract is out of the question even tho Dalé is probably sweating over not being able to hand out a 8 year contract to Borg.

Trocheck is already been slotted with other 3rd liners, Vatrano and Connolly, so one could see what the future holds for him with the Cats. Trocheck is an above average 2nd liner but he has some detriments to his game, like being too one dimensional up 'n down skater. If the Cats can find themselves a checking 3rd line center from their prospect pool, via trade or from the FA for something like $4mil per, then Trocheck is good as gone when his contract is up. Like you said, Barkov and Borgstrom project to be the top6 centers.

I don't think that the Cats mgmt cant worry about losing in Weegar's trade value if Pysyk is on the roster as well. Water under the bridge already at this point.

One thing that sways it for me in Hoffmans favor is us having alot more playmakers in Barkov, Huberdeau and Borgstrom.
Hepo, Denny and Noel also project as playmakers which make Dadonovs role more expendable imo.

As stated above, nobody replaces Hoffs shot/PP ability, Tippett or Vatrano being the closest. You keep the rarer need/asset. Hoffman, Tippett and Vatrano could all provide 25 goals in an ideal situation. It's a nice blend of shooters and playmakers as you have one on each line next year.

I'd like to see a future #1PP unit of Barkov, Huberdeau, Hoffman, Tippett and Yandle/Ekblad for a good 3-4 years.

I agree with this. It’s easy for fans to say Hoff is “just” a shooter, but like you say they’ll regret it after he’s let go.

Hoff isn’t “just” a shooter either. He’s one of the most lethally accurate and quickest release shooters around. A top-10 in that category in the league currently.

If their salary demands were exactly the same, I’d keep Hoffman. In fact, I think Hoff is worth about $1.5M more than Dads. If it gets more skewed than that, then it’s a very tough decision.

If they want term, let's say five years, who's going to be effective still at that point? I think health is going to play a major part in that decision. Both guys have pros and cons, they're fairly even value wise for me.
