Seems like stats wise he's doing worse every year. Having done well over ppg as a 17 year old, you'd expect him to absolutely crush it as a 19 year old. But instead he's doing way worse. He also looked a lot better in the 2018 pre-season training camp, than in 2019, so the signs aren't looking good :(

Way worse is an incredible stretch for having 23 points in 25 games this year. Bowen Byram is also having a "much worse" season than he did in his draft year yet I dont think the sky is falling around him. I would relax on Ty, he's an incredibly smart player who has all the tools to be a top 4 D man in the NHL.

Ya Junior's roster's fluctuate pretty dramatically, so that can be a big factor. Also have to consider situational use, this year Spokane has another d-man at around a PPG, have to figure that guy is getting some decent pp time, so maybe Smith is getting more toi in less offense oriented situations. We always knew Smith played a more all around game, and that may be cutting into his offensive #'s this year.

Is it encouraging that his offensive production has dropped? No, but without knowing the situation I don't think it's a major concern either.

You missed games played. He had better stats last year than 2 years ago.

17-18: 1.06 ppg / 0.20 gpg
18-19: 1.21 ppg / 0.12 gpg
19-20: 0.93 ppg / 0.24 gpg

Less goals though and his +- dropped from +44 to +5 (yeah yeah, i know i know relax  )

If I was an avs fan I'd be a little concerned about Byram though, if he's supposedly the next franchise dman. Right now his 18-19 season looks a bit of a fluke, he also looked very underwhelming at the WJCs. My point was that Smith (and Byram) are playing their third year at the juniors (or draft +2), to justify their hype their totals should be way higher. Had you left someone like Aaron Ekblad to juniors for two more years, I bet he would have scored at 1.5-2.0 ppg rate, and he's still not even close a ppg player in the NHL.

But yeah it's still early, but it's fair to say that my expectations for both of these D prospects has gone way done.

EDIT: Oops, Byram is obviously playing Draft+1 and not +2 like I mentioned above, but the point still stands otherwise (for Smith at least)

Ekblad was also like 6'3 215 at age 18 lol can really dominate juniors like that. I think he hasnt looked amazing, but there's still half the year left and I think Ty is too smart of a player to not be a good NHL player. I just think we all thought he was this dazzling D prospect, when in reality he's a low floor D prospect who can play in any situation and also produce well offensively. I will not be concerned about Ty when he's still playing in Spokane. 2 goals and 2 assists in 3 games since he got back so maybe he can be use the World Junior Gold as a jump start.

Severson put up big points in the WHL and he's awful. Sometimes points dosent tell the story. As long as Smith can defend that is all i care about.

Severson's got mental issues or something. At times he looks like a true first pair defender with his physical play, good hands and offensive output, and then the next moment he looks like he has no business playing even in the AHL. Doesn't help that the Devils have sucked as a team his entire time here though.

Spokane did graduate two of their leading scorers last year, so as a whole the team is scoring slightly less than the previous two years; Ie, Dougie Hamilton's D+2 numbers were slightly down from his D+1 because his junior team didn't score as much the previous year, Brock Boeser's sophomore year at North Dakota wasn't as good as his freshman year because a bunch of guys graduated/turned pro.

Not really as focused on his point production as much as I'm hoping he's doing well defensively. I don't think offense is necessarily going to be Smith's calling card as a pro.

Exactly what we needed. An LHD to replace Greene, with strong upside.

You could say he is a bit small but neither is Greene and if he was 6’2”, there is no way he would have fallen out of the top 10.

Pronman reranked the 2018 draft last September, he had Smith originally ranked 21 before the draft but he moved up to 15. Even at 15 there are SIX defensemen ahead of Smith, that drafts’ defensive depth is bonkers.

Bahl moved up to 34 after being unranked before the draft, Pronman admitted in another article that he underestimated Bahl’s upside.

Now 2nd among dmen who have played at least 25 games in pt/gm. He's been hot lately.

He's been heating up lately with 11 points in has past 6 games.

Ty Smith with a goal and 3 assists last night. Now at 35 points (9 goals, 26 assists) in 32 games this year. I believe he has 18 points (5 goals, 13 assists) in 11 games since coming back from the WJC so he really used that as a springboard, more points since coming back in 10 less games.

I was just about to post a similar update. The degradation of Ty Smith as a prospect was premature.

So perhaps things are not so Doom-and-Gloom for Ty like @ninetyeight implied. :)

At the world juniors Byram played in a lot of important minutes and keep in mind was playing with the flu....had him on bottom pair than moved him up ....I hope they get worried and send him to New Jersey LoL it ain't going to happen though
