Czechs come 4th in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, with a 6-1 loss to Sweden in the bronze medal game. A good overall result considering the fact that we beat Russia and Finland. An overview of the tournament is given here, with a small section on Kvapil, Pavelka and Beran being excluded from the last two games owing to a discliplinary breach:

http://www.hokej.cz/index.php?lng=CZ&view=clanek&id=48747

I was quite surprised when I read about those 3 guys sent home during the tournament. I guess it could affect concentration of the team during last 2 games a little bit... but I guess it's better if something like that happens now than during U18 WC.

U20

EDIT: roster updated 23.8.2010

CZE U20 roster for upcoming tournament in Sweden and trip to Canada - some people will be excluded. Purpose of these actions is to try out players, who will play next season in Czech Republic. The only exception could be Straka and Culek - they weren't with the team during the first tournament in Switzerland, but coaches declared that they need to have players during at least one international tournament, if they want to be invited to WJC in Buffalo. So these two will have to talk to their agents and clubs and get released for some national team games, probably those played in September in Windsor.

Goaltenders:
Libor KašÃk (HC PSG Zlín) - tournament in Sweden
Tomáš Král (Lillehammer, Norway) - tournament in Canada
Marek Mazanec (HC Plzeň 1929) - tournament in Sweden
Filip Novotný (HC Sparta Praha) - tournament in Canada

Defensemen:
Oldřich Horák (HC PSG Zlín)
Bohumil Jank (HC MOUNTFIELD České Budějovice)
Jakub Krejčík (HC Slavia Praha)
Martin Pláněk (HC Orli Znojmo)
Dan Růžička (HC Plzeň 1929)
Dalibor Řezníček (HC PSG Zlín)
Petr Šenkeřík (HC PSG Zlín)

Forwards:
Michal Bulíř (HC Bílí Tygři Liberec)
Jakub Culek (Rimouski Océanic, QMJHL)
Ondřej Havlíček (HC Slovan Ústečtí Lvi)
Adam Havlík (HC Orli Znojmo)
Radim Heřman (HC MOUNTFIELD České Budějovice)

Slavomír Lener, director of sports section of CIHA (which was formed few months ago), introduced first phase of his new development program of hockey youth during Ivan Hlinka Tournament in Břeclav at special meeting of 75 youth coaches from top czech leagues of all categories. They were given new methodical materials made by CIHA, which they should include to their training process and it will be constantly inspected by Lener and his people from sports section of CIHA. Also more such education meetings will be held in the future. This first move was named "Ten tips how to help czech hockey" and key points of this whole strategy are:

1. Training of dynamics and acceleration
2. Push to the opponent's net
3. Individual training of technique
4. Transition from defense to offense - speed, timeliness, active involvement of defenseman
5. Transition from offense to defense - immediate forechecking with all 5 players
6. Stick penalties
7. Coaching - development of individuality
8. Communication
9. Training off the ice - every day
10. School, other duties

Hopefully this should be start of the new chapter in czech youth hockey and our longterm comeback where we belong.

Yeah I agree. But I think that missing them off the roster was a bit extreme cos Pavelka especially was apparently very good in goal against the russians, so who knows if we might have had a better result in the semis or even the third place playoff.

+ U17: 22.08. 2010: SUI-CZE 6:7 (Brandi, Duenner, Lanzarotti, Praplan 2x, Sterchi - Matějček, Salák, Tomeček, Volek 4x)

Quite moderate results. U16 could and should be better than 3rd and not lose match against Slovakia... that loss with Russia also could be closer, but it's still not a big failure IMO. This week looks overall neither bad nor good.

Yes, the U-16's were a bit rubbish. Worst of all the goaltenders had a SVS% around 70% (which is shocking!!) But players to look out for are Vrana, Kopta, and Zdrahal. Especially Vrana as he's 1996 class-which is rumoured to be a very strong generation of players. At least the U-17's produced a good result.

Today I finally found schedule of U20 trip to Canada... looks really interesting. I think this is the best thing of all national teams events of this autumn - great chance for guys from CZE to try NA ice and get used to new style of play before WJC, which could be key factor for their performance at WJC.

Question...

What about Tomas Filippi? Does he have a chance to make the U20 team next December? I read the part about Culek and Straka not being invited because they went to their NHL camp. Filippi could have been there and he wasn't even invited. I guess he has zero to no chance chance then.

Filippi has been pretty good so far in the QMJHL. 7 goals and 3 assists in 5 games.

He's good so far. But there is probably no big chance for him this year. though I think if he continues in this way in QMJHL, coaches will consider inviting him, it's not unreal, but next year is more probable.

Why are there others ahead of him because I would think he would be a lock based on his play.

Problem is he wasnt considered for WJC before the season, so they werent following him so much and he didnt play at international pre season tournament for guys from CHL. Also its too short time to say he is lock. They played just few games. I think everybody is surprised by his performance right now and if he continues like this he can be invited.

Can someone help me understand the stats feature in the junior/midget section of hokej.cz? They were fairly clear to me in the past but they've changed the acronyms for the leagues. I'm assuming the "ELMD" is the U18 midget league. What is the "ELSD" and why are there no stats listed for it? Are the various "Z" and "S" listings associated with these two leagues different divisions within these leagues? Why are there no stats for the U20 league?

Thanks a lot.

Thanks a lot.

Before the 09/10 season, the Czech Extraliga dorostu was an U17 league, before last season the junior leagues system underwent a reorganization and two seperate doraot leagues were created- an U16 league- Extraliga mladšÃho dorostu-ELMD and an U18 league - Extraliga staršÃho dorostu- ELSD. You can read more info on the whole reorganozation issue over here at IHF.

All of the leagues are divided into groups- divisions and for example each team plays twice as much games against teams from it´s group than from the others. So Z for example would stand for západ- West.

I´m not sure why the U20 Extraliga stats aren´t available.

Hope I helped at least a bit.

Ive already made my prediction here: http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=744708&page=8 . But as I see, probably Kaberle should be added there and maybe Klesla.

I´ve made this list of all players we have playing abroad in all relevant leagues. It´s for me and everybody else who wants to follow them without browsing the net or searching EP. Also the national team will be built of the players mainly from this list through the whole season - except the best players of Extraliga who can also make the roster of course.
