"Current AHL teams" as they exist? None have the talent (players nor hockey ops) for significant success at the NHL level.

Possible NHL franchises replacing an AHL franchise in the AHL city? Even that's a stretch, but I'd give slim chances to Ontario & San Diego & Chicago. Each has the market space to draw NHL-sized crowds, but each would need a new arena among many other investments (private & public) to succeed.

Expansion draft worthy AHL teams that will be successful in the NHL? Are their any current AHL cities that can grow into an NHL city?

Expansion draft worthy AHL teams that will be successful in the NHL? ...
The primary confusion with that collection of words (beyond whatever "Expansion draft worthy AHL teams" means o_O ) is that even if a current AHL city manages to be awarded an NHL franchise, it won't be the AHL team that becomes the NHL team. Player roster will be different, coaching staff will be different, Hockey Ops organization will be different. Even if the AHL franchise bequeaths its team name to the incoming NHL club, it still won't be the same team.

You're still asking two completely different questions. For the first, expansion draft is an event where an expansion team chooses an unprotected players from each of the other teams in the league. Your second question is asking which AHL markets would be good NHL ones. It's two completely different things.

Are you asking what AHL markets would be good NHL ones if the NHL were to expand again, or are you asking which AHL rosters/players could compete in the NHL?

No NHL teams are being regulated to AHL and no AHL teams will be promoted to NHL. Head to Europe for those kinds of swaps. :D

San Diego might be able to support an NHL team with the military influence. Without the Chargers to compete for fan dollars, might be an interesting thought. They would need a new arena, which might be able to be built in the area the Chargers used to play. The mass transit is already in place, plenty of parking, and fairly easy access via both highways and side streets.
