That is Crosby versus McDavid in terms of career points per game as of December 12th, 2018.

At what point does McDavid pass Crosby? Does McDavid even pass Crosby?

Discuss.

Yes. Crosby's is only going to keep going down as he plays into the twilight of his career. McDavid's isn't trending downward anytime soon

Not sure he will pass him because offense tends to peak so early.

McDavid is already nearing the point where PPG starts to go down.

Granted, Crosby's will be going down as well, and at a faster rate as he ages.

McDavid will obviously drop off in PPG as he gets old as well though. If he passes Crosby I dare say it'll only be temporarily.

Points per game peaks at 25 for forwards.

Maybe for the average NHL player, the absolute top tier forwards (McDavid, Ovechkin, Crosby, Malkin) pretty much hit their peak by the time they're 20.
Malkin's rookie season was when he was 20/21... not the best example.

You're right though, most peak early but closer to 23/24 than 20

None of those players hit their peak points per game at 20.

Crosby was 24, Malkin 25 and Ovechkin 24.
"peak PPG year" is so meaningless, at 20 you know what they were and their production howered around the same number for their prime years. Besides what do all of those years have in common? They missed games, didn't Crosby play like 40 games in his career PPG year?

When certain things happen and different areas of success or shown and possibly certain things are won then at some point when the unknowable future becomes a reality we will have more answers to this.

Crosby scored 72 points when he was 20, Malkin scored 85 points and Ovechkin scored 106 points.

Scoring was inflated when these players entered the league due to the obscure amount of powerplays anyways.

You're counting 22 games as Crosby's "peak" season. Impossible to know how that season would have played out. Crosby's best points per game in anything resembling a full season was at age 19.
Consensus is that Crosby's peak was at 23-25 but was derailed by injuries.

Points were heavily inflated in 06-07 compared to the rest of Crosby's prime, so it's not a good comparison. Scoring is trending up now, while it started high and descended through Crosby's prime.

In couple of years.
If McD scores 110 in 82 this year, PPG will go to 1.258, if Crosby scores 90 in 79, his PPG drops to 1.279.
Current Crosby's PPG over this and last season is 1.110, McDs is 1.348

So Ovis/Malkin/Sids peak was the lowest scoring ?

Shocking, or not, theyre special talent and transcend era.

I wonder where the scoring will go from now until McDavids retirement.
