Being relatively new to hockey, i was wondering at around what time that the Crosby hype was started?

When Crosby was 15 or 16, Wayne Gretzky saw him play and said something to the effect that "this kid could break my records". That put Crosby on the national radar.

At the Air Canada Cup in 2002 he was absolutely dominant as a 14 year old against some of the best 16 and 17 year old players in the country. First time he was on national TV.

I'd heard of him as early as 2000, and I knew he'd be a superstar by 2002 even before the Air Canada Cup. I'm the same age as him and I was playing a fairly high level of hockey at that time, word gets around.

Much as I love Gretzky, he is way too generous with his compliments sometimes.
