Okay I'll calm down now. Just had to blow off steam.

Every word of this is true. And planes are still landing here from China.
Believe it or not morally I don't have an issue with them dragging back Canadians who went abroad before this issue became widespread. I do have a heart. My issue is the idiots that went when this issue was considered a real and serious issue. But even then I guess you don't get rid of a child just because he's a bit kookoo.

Let's just hope they are actively testing EVERYONE that lands in Canada. I haven't followed up on the development but I did read that initially their airport testing was equivalent to mocking this virus as a trivial inconvenience which is very tough to come to terms with when your government leaves you, the population out to suffer like that

Emergency Measures Act ... sounds like it depends on whether everyone starts taking social distancing seriously.

What would that look like for city and rural? Do you mean nobody will go to work at all and complete lockdown?

This is a sad truth but not something people are comfortable talking about

If there's blame to place on anyone it's the federal government for allowing it to get to this point

Perhaps some blame should be placed on those who return to the country, KNOW they are supposed to self quarantine but don't?

What it seems everyone is looking for is a combination of a benevolent police state with socialism.

Lock everyone up and implement that UBI!

Why? Are you sick? Because you're part of the problem if you're not

I can't believe people are still advocating for the use of masks within the general population. No matter how hard people try to disseminate fact-based information, it still fails to get through to people.

It's infuriating

this.

You realize the test results take a day or more to come back?

If they test them at the airport or not they have to self quarantine for 14 days.

People aren't being tested if they don't have symptoms.

How do you suggest the government monitor every person who has been outside of the country?

I’d be more worried about Americans taking the trek up north or Canadians returning from the USA than I would a plane from China.

The risk there is known. Protocols are in place.

So many sided with their President in viewing this as a non issue. They have no adequate testing. Up until a few days ago... it was business as usual.

There are 15,000 cases in New York State alone. And that’s just the ones they tested.

I've had friends who upon coming back from all over the globe were not even questioned about where they're returning from, no temp taking etc, and one had returned from Italy. WTF?

I heard about the USA initially landing its planes in an empty area in Nevada and then going from there. I do agree that they should be self quarantining for 14 days regardless of symptoms but even that right from the get go should've been a thing with the legal consequences of not complying outlined. All the flexing of what they'll do to you should've been done then.

People should have been tested regardless of whether or not they had symptoms

The official Scientific site that the actual papers were on? That or the video on Brighteon? So disregard the actual Doctor and conversation with the other doctors and demonize the place where the video was published?

That's so basic.
I was talking about HFBoards.

This is the type of shit I'm talking about. They compromised all of us just to not hurt feelings and now they want to hurt everyone's feelings threatening to put in drastic draconian rules in place if we don't obey their self isolation commands and then blaming us for compromising our civil liberties further by not compromising our civil liberties. Paraphrasing but this is literally what she said, will try to find the video

That's why I don't work for the government. It's not easy. There are a lot of stupid people and it's hard to find that balance that works for everyone. Just takes one person to f*** everything up for everyone no matter how many precautions the rest of the population takes. It's the reason we have laws lol

The thing is, we had examples of what was working (Taiwan, Singapore, South Korea) and what not to do (Italy, Spain) but still dropped the ball. This was such low hanging fruit it's beyond belief we didn't act (and still aren't to great extent). And as said above, all in the name of not wanting to offend people.
Oh for sure. I totally agree. We had a ton of time to prepare and we squandered it and still lagging behind in many aspects. We should totally do what some others are doing (South Korea etc.). Just saying, considering I generally don't think our government (regardless of liberals or conservatives) are competent enough at the best of times, we could have easily been way worse (Spain, Italy, even the US). Course, BC is annoyingly slow to respond, government and the populace.

Yep, I'm in in the at risk group. My wife is in an even greater risk group, with a compromised immune system.

I was in the military so I know how liberties can be restricted.

I don't know how the government monitors millions of people 24/7.

Perhaps lease the Chinese people watching software and implement on every street corner?

(Dis)incentives drive behaviour. Just outlining severe penalties for those violating quarantine would help keep many more at home depending on how severe the penalty is. I have no idea how Russia has been doing it, apparently some kind of facial recognition app on places like buses

yup. My dad returned from Vegas and Arizona area said airport really wasn’t much different. He has felt fine but has self quarenteed in his home alone. He wanted to make sure just in case. My mom has been staying at my sisters. They drop him off food and he is on a lake so he can walk dog and stays away from anyone. If everyone did this it woulda helped.

I wonder how people (voters) will view the public health/safety versus defense continuum in the future? Are defense and public safety/health not designed for the same (broad) basic goals - to protect the public? Will there be a greater emphasis in certain areas, and less in others? If so, will government/taxpayer funding change (thinking of the U.S. primarily I guess)?

Its interesting to ponder if nothing else ......

Yeah no doubt. Definitely interesting to think about.

I imagine itll definitely have a pretty big effect on the next election in the States forsure too.

I would have been in Vegas as we speak if this virus hadn't happened, got my room deposit back, but the best I could do is get a credit with Expedia for my flight (good for 13 months from original booking), had I book direct with WestJet I'd have gotten a full refund, something to keep in mind to those who book thru Expedia.

I was supposed to be in Florida with the team I coach. We are fighting like hell to get the 20 000 we put in back from the hotels and the organizers.

They want to give credit for future events but that will not work for all

Next week or two is going to be very informative as to how widespread this issue is in different countries, states/provinces, cities, etc. Stay safe everyone.

IMO next week or two would tell us whether or not majority of Canadians adhered to the guidelines provided the both the federal and provincial governments; i.e. if Canadians were f***ing idiots and selfish OR they adhered to the rules for the health of the community, city, province/territory and country
