I’ve seen this from many people who play sports and just people in general. We just had almost 18 months where you couldn’t do much and worked from home, how hard was it to workout? Run, walk, push-ups, sit-ups, body weight strength stuff take no equipment or special gyms.

I've been working out from home during the pandemic. I've kept myself in good shape. I will say, though- even when I was working out at the gym- the first few games of hockey still wiped me out. I don't know if it's the cardio or just the muscles used are different, but damn- it takes me a couple of games to get back into shape.

One of the very quiet, sneaky things about the pandemic is the amount of time people spent sitting down. Most of us are already pretty sedentary, but WFH slashed away a large portion of the average person's daily walking and standing time. Simply walking to and from the car, up and down the office hall, across your corporate park, back and forth to lunch, whatever. All of that was replaced by a few dozen steps from your bed to your desk (if that... I found I could usually at least start my day with my laptop on the bedside table).

That doesn't sound like such a big deal in the context of athletics, but that movement is absolutely crucial to core muscle and joint function. Workouts don't make up for it. It's frightening to think of how many people out there have literally withered from the inside, and what that's going to mean for their long term health outlooks (which were already clearly tied to a lack of standing and walking before pandemic conditions began).

Someone out there is currently compiling future Nobel Prize winning research on the health outcomes of tens of millions of people just sitting around for a year.

Your getting old! Right before this hit I had hurt my back pretty bad and gained a bunch of weight. I used the time to run and bike and do strength train. I’m down about 20lbs and have put on some muscle. Now it wasn’t hockey shape, but it was good enough shape that I wasn’t dead the next day or or gasses from shift to shift.

First time out in the ice for my team and myself. Ontario just opened up the arenas about 2 weeks ago or so

We got word that in Kingston, Ontario after Labour Day they are dropping all the rink restrictions (except for masks) and we can play men’s league again.

Bah.

Oldest kid is trying out for Peewee AA this year. He went in one camp a week ago to get ready. We received an email that two kids in the camp tested positive for Covid. So we had him tested as well - yup positive.

So now he's going to have to sit for the next 10 days, missing another camp we were going to have him in (hopefully we can get a refund!) right before evaluations.

Major PW/vaccinated/breakthrough, or Minor PW/unvaccinated? At some point Hockey Canada is going to have to step in and put some mandates in across the board. Local associations won't ever be brave enough, it will have to come from above. OHL and CCHL and lots of schools already have those in place, but it's going to have to become a blanket mandate for minor hockey at some point. At least for the age-eligible groups. Otherwise the way things are going it could become another lost year. :(

My men’s league team took on the Deseronto Bulldogs of the Eastern Ontario Senior A league. Senior Hockey is no joke. A few of the guys have played at least a season of Tier 2 Junior A
