Wow, I really thought eastern Asia would play a much bigger role. Especially Japan, I had the impression that they were way ahead of the curve with mobile tech.

The top countries have a high number of migrant workers or other such factors explaining why there are many more cell phone subscriptions than people. Significant relation to technological advancement there isn't anymore. That said, the cell phone market in Japan is still a disgrace.
