Hey guys. Wanted your opinion on Budaj ... do you think he could be a starter in the league ? Obviously with a lower end team but either way I think he has the talent to put up decent numbers ?

I know this comes up right after a SO but he has always been solid with us. He also was a starter at the beginning of his career with a at best average Colorado team and I think maybe he never got a real chance to rebound back.

He used to be a starter with Colorado a few years ago 31-16 2.68 .905 in 2006-07 like you said but other than that...I don't know if that's his role. He seems to like it here as a backup.

He's better as a backup than as a starter.

nope, he can't even be a 1A/B goalie, with the Avs he was horrible in that role.

He is get in a pure backup role, get spot starts, 13-17 games a year, and gets to work on his game in practice, he is known to be one of the nicest guys and works really hard in practice.

unless you want to tank, Budaj shouldn't be playing more than 20 games a year.

I am not saying we should play him more often. I am just wondering what is value as a potential starter would be, if any...

Pretty good 2nd goalie... I believe there is 30 goalies that are better than him in the league so no.

Well I'm kinda generally talking to, I mean if you were looking to be a playoff team, would you sign Budaj to be your starter...

I don't think so, maybe a team in a build like the Flames, but for example if i'm the oilers and are looking for a real solution for goalie to take the team to the next step, Budaj isn't the answer.

  8. I think he enjoys the non-pressure of being a backup, and it helps his game.

Can he be a starter? Maybe. He's definitely an elite backup though.

10 to 15 years ago, yes he would be... Now with the emergence of elite scandinavian goalie, the competition is too steep.

Of course he could and I'll bet there are teams right now that would like to have him

I am pretty sure Calgary would take him over their Ramo/Macdonald combo.

I think that ship has sailed for budaj. But I think he's definitely getting better and if he keeps this up he'll have 5 or 6 more years in his career making million+ salary.

Having said that I am in favour of Budaj getting more starts. If he can handle a 30 game load and can perform even near what we've seen in his 10-0 streak , it helps the team and helps Price.

He's not capable of enduring many starts and he's not consistent. His biggest asset are his flexibility and his reflexes - he's great in a backup role but nothing more than that.

Ned/Bunny Budaj... doing a super job as backup right now... I wonder how much of that is due to him being at peace with the universe? He seems to be in his zone. I don't think anybody thinks he can be a starter anywhere, and maybe it's better if nobody even thinks of thinking about it? :dunno:

I love him as a backup. But he's just that, a great backup. I believe if he played over 60 games a season he'd easily get exploited.

Again, this isn't a knock on Budaj, I don't think we could ask for a better back up goalie both on and off the ice.
