Italy Risks Losing Grip in South With Fear of Looting, Riots

From the article:

"As Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte fights to hold Italian society together through a crippling nationwide lockdown, the depressed south is turning into a powder keg.

Police have been deployed on the streets of Sicily’s capital, Palermo, amid reports gangs are using social media to plot attacks on stores. A bankrupt ferry company halted service to the island, including vital supplies of food and medicines.

As the state creaks under the strain of the coronavirus pandemic, officials worry the mafia may be preparing to step in
."
... and?

This is Italy, the mafia is, as always, trying to capitalize on a moment of crisis. They will have some success, but these days they are almost dependent on a crisis these days to stay relevant. 100% they will enjoy a bit of success in these days, but trust me, the eradication of the mafia is so ingrained in the backbone of Italians these days that it will not last long.

The mafia's biggest mistake was to assassinate Falcone and Boresellino. This was a long time ago, but instead of putting fear into the enemies of the mafia it made two "martyrs" (their belief was that the mafia could be eradicated). These guys are national heroes in a way that I have never seen, anywhere. For sure no Swede in Sweden would ever come close the status those two have in Italy. It will still take a very long time, but the mafia's days are numbered.

I find it beyond irritating to watch people with leftist views claiming moral high ground. If they relied on industry for their paycheques (well actually they do but not directly, something most of them fail to realize), I guarantee you their political opinions would change almost immediately. Because they’re like almost every other person on the planet, ruled by self interest and their emotions.

That’s not to say people who behave poorly from the right aren’t irritating as well but at least they’re not hiding behind moral supremacy. It’s far more honest in my view and thus more admirable.

This world needs more pragmatism and less idealism. Figure out what we want as a society and figure out how to actually do something about it. Most of you would rather have something to fight about than to actually fix what your screaming about.

Your last statement contradicts itself

It is via idealism that society is built

What you are saying is that you only want people who think act and believe in the same things as you to make decisions. Take your pick, is that dictatorship, communism or fascism?

And before you attack, remember I have lost my job due to this out break, I have no real support system and my account is running on empty

You can bash us lefties as much as you like but have you or any of your family ever used the free medical system canada and it did not leave you broke? You have idealistic lefties to thank for that.

Canada was once covered in an ice sheet 365 days a year. The world is warming. This is not a new thing. It will warm faster than it did then because it doesn't have as much ice as it did then. Just as a big ice cube takes longer to melt in a warm glass of water than a small one. This was long before people were wandering around these parts.

Is some of the speed of the increase due to humans? Logic would say obviously, but nothing is going to stop it though. If they start using the flatten the curve stuff on you, well...that will be truly nonsense.

The doomsayer stuff where we are all going to die unless we pay a carbon tax or return to a world with no pavement is what I call the climate crap made up by the climate gang.

Logic would say? Or do you mean a 97% consensus from published climatologists (experts in the field)? Ignorance and hand waving may be the norm for the rebel media crowd but it probably isn’t a good look anywhere else.

Lol, imagine assuming everyone on the left thought like that.

Speaking of preachiness, my family, filled with people working in industry. Growing up, lived on that. So yes, I actually am aware of the paycheque struggle.

I wouldn’t say everyone on the left no. Those with more centric views are usually far more pragmatic. But people who express themselves in the manner that you do are a big problem. That’s another problem with idealism, it’s often confrontational and divisive all while pretending not to be.

I’m neither left or right. Most of my family are teachers. My values vary greatly on the political scale. Thanks.

Insert ‘capitalism’ in place of ‘democracy’ and there were more than a few people posting exactly that in this very thread. :shakehead
The trouble is that history is simply not taught in schools. No young person today seems to know how, and more importantly why, socialism has failed every time it has been tried on a large scale - often with mass murder being an end result. They don’t seem to understand why capitalism, for all its flaws, has created the comfortable and safe lifestyle we enjoy today. There is always a market for easy answers (see Bernie Sanders) but the masses should know better. Too many of us don’t.

haha. When I was upgrading High School credits to attend NAIT we had mean ping pong games going every lunch time at the College (AVC). Sprained my ankle during a lunch hour game just before my Physics 30 final FFS. Sat through the entire 2 1/2 hours of pain, even though the instructor told me to go home and take it later. Was on crutches for a month and a half afterwards.

Sorry for the OT post. Had to share

Unpopular opinion: the world could use more open-minded centrists.

Lol I was thinking this as well. I think there are a lot of people out there who would or could fall into this category but they lack representation and voice, they also don't tend to go around broadcasting their views loudly. Unfortunately we are forced to choose between two options that seem to get further apart by the day.

Personally I think it's a great time for us to become more pragmatic about how we do things and show people that we can get a lot more accomplished if we all compromised more and worked together to achieve prosperity and better quality of life. But it seems the loudest people on both sides want to draw lines in the sand and take an all or nothing attitude.

While I dont doubt there's some manipulation with China's numbers, IMO, this is just politicians deflecting attention away from their own mishandling of their own countries situation. Like if all these countries bitching about China's numbers already don't trust them, why put that much faith into their numbers in the first place? I mean, all these countries had 2-3 months head start.

At this point, just worry about your own selves and deal with it as you see fit.

Check the video I just posted. They lied every f*cking step of the way.
