I mean Gretzky had an insane plus minus but basically floated around the neutral zone or the blue line when the puck was in his end. Truly all time great players can get to high positives just by tilting the ice offensively. I wouldn't pick McDavid as a top 10 defensive forward or anything close to it but his impact on the game is massively positive when he's out there that it will bear out in +/- for sure.

The whole narrative of "Crosby is sooooooooo elite defensively" is almost as funny as the narrative around Matthews. They're fine. Good even.

Funnily enough, Matthews has 5 seasons where he is +20 plus/minus, or 6 seasons as +19

His +/- could just mean he plays with 2 Selke caliber linemates and he just plays offense only. +/- Is basically a line chemistry stat, indicating how effective the entire line is without context.

Of course +/- needs context like all stats but McDavid is indeed playing good defensively this season.
