I was thinking about something interesting and wanted to do a little project.

I just wanted to take a 3 year span of drafts and see how they compare to each other. I picked these years to compare, though I fully understand that there are still plenty of players developing from these drafts that haven't come to the NHL yet.

For me, I just wanted to see if I could make a 1st round top 31 out of all the players selected from these 3 drafts. It was not as easy as I thought it would be. There are a lot of names not making it, plenty of others still developing that I didn't add, and others that might be too high or too low. Just a difficult task.

So if anyone else wants to join me in making a top 31 from these 3 draft years, please go ahead, I would like to see how they look and which year is the most dominant one.

Here are my top 31 players picked from 2014-2016 NHL Drafts if a draft was held today:

first round results
2014 draft - 12 players
2015 draft - 12 players
2016 draft - 7 players

I am a bit surprised that the 2014 draft has as much talent as it does as I thought it was a weak year...obviously 2015 and 2016 still has plenty of kids to turn pro, but it still shows that 2014 will not be a bad draft - maybe not great but definitely solid.

As of right now(at this point in they’re career and development) Laine currently is, I’m sure this will be back and fourth but again right now you have to take the leading goal scorer who’s still a teen and also who’s team has more points and wins. All I’m saying is It’s not indefinitely(just as I think Barzal isn’t either, I think those guys will switch back and fourth for the next couple seasons depending on performance). It’s pretty simple who’s better today IMO.

I have Laine #2 on that list as well and I bet a lot of other people too do (why wouldn't they). It's the person who has the last laugh that matters.

yeah, I honestly do not get the "laughable" comment .

as big of a Matthews fan that I am, Laine has been amazing - I have no issue with anyone putting Laine above Matthews right now. Matthews needs to come back strong and finish out the year on a positive note.

Yeah and that's before I even noticed that the same guy had McAvoy and Barzal ahead of Laine (not that they are bad or anything). :D Would not be surprised if he was located somewhere around Toronto area. Go figure.

I'd have Matthews ahead of Laine just slightly but I don't think it's at all clear cut. It could go either way at this point. Just goes to show how people sometimes judge young players too quickly.

He's pretty clearly a Vancouver fan. His name used to be Bure to Mogilny and is now Gaudette to Boeser backwards.
And he's blindly jealous of the Jets (and I would assume Leafs) because they had a seemingly successful rebuild. He likes to lash out and show his insecurity and lack of knowledge.

All you need to do is read his list.

Where is Connor?
Laine at 6?

For whatever reason he's a wee bit obsessed with the Jets and it shows in literally every ranking he does and nearly every mainboard post.

I'm surprised Ehlers even made his list tbh.

I think Fabbri is a bit high and Vince Dunn deserves to be on the list. The injuries to Fabbri have really halted his development, and who knows how he looks upon returning.

I might be a little low on him...I just can't bump any of the names ahead of him to be honest...not an easy list to make for sure.
Hard to argue that Marner is better than Barzal and Pasta to this point but I would take him over Ekblad and the rest of those guys before him.. But it's a matter of opinions for sure.
