I fear that the this will show that the 2011 draft is actually(while reasonably deep) much inferior to the 2010 draft in the first round especially

Now, I think we need to base our drafting on what we know of the 2011 draftees as of today, but what we knew of the 2010 draftees as of the 2010 Entry draft....because lets be real Skinner would go higher, and possibly Seguin would go lower if we base it on today. Also, Fowler wouldn't be going so darn low.

So here's my Top 20

1. Hall - 10
2. Seguin - 10
3. Larsson
4. RNH
5. Johansen - 10
6. Landeskog
7. Skinner - 10
8. Gudbranson - 10
9. Niederriter - 10
10. Couturier
11. Strome
12. Fowler - 10
13. Gormley - 10
14. Hamilton
15. Murphy
16. Tarasenko - 10
17. Burmistrov - 10
18. Schwartz - 10
19. Connolly - 10
20. Campbell - 10

I'd have 13 of the Top 20 from 2010

This would be my top 10 if everyone was in one draft class:

1. Hall - 10
2. Seguin - 10
3. Larsson
4. RNH
5. Gudbranson - 10
6. Johansen - 10
7. Landeskog
8. Couturier
9. Skinner - 10
10. Fowler -10

This does NOT take into account anything done at the NHL level, simply how I think the draft of all the prospects would go if all combined into one draft class. I had a tough time trying to figure out where guys like Landeskog, Gudbranson, and Johansen would go, but those guys could be pretty interchangeable.

I'd have 13 of the Top 20 from 2010

The exercise makes no sense if you're going to take into account what we now know about the 2010 class. You have a much better reading with that extra year - this inherently and heavily biases the comparison in 2010s favor.

If you want like with like, then it's June 2010 compared to March 2011 (and even that is somewhat biased, since we're missing the playoffs and U18 for this year's class). That means you have to use the draft order for the 2010 class.

On that basis (2010 picks in bold):

1. Hall
2. Seguin

3. Larsson
4. RNH
5. Landeskog
6. Couturier
7. Gudbranson
8. Johansen

9. Strome
10. Niederreiter
11. Connolly
12. Skinner

13. Hamilton
14. Burmistrov
15. Granlund
16. McIlrath

17. Murphy
18. Campbell
19. Fowler
20. Gormley

I think Landeskog and Couturier are more firmly established as players with top flight potential than Gudbranson or Johansen was when they were drafted. I also suspect Strome would be more in that category than Niederreiter or Connolly (given his injury problems). In 2010, once you were past Hall and Seguin, you were into players who either were perceived to have severe drawbacks or risks (Connolly, Fowler etc), or whose upside as really top prospects was questionable (Niederreiter), somewhat speculative (Gudbranson) or very recently established (Johansen). I suspect this would put them behind the top 4 in this draft, and that Strome also might pass some of them.
