Panarin left a team which made the second round of the playoffs to join a team in a full on rebuild. Panarin is free to go wherever he wishes, the fans are free to take that as an insult and boo him.

I see zero things wrong from any of the involved parties.

Edit - gotta love autocorrect. Panasonic

Panarin was booed every time he touched the puck last night. People buy tickets and can express their feelings any way they want. And their feelings were hurt. The fact that Panarin is having an amazing season doesn't help.

But Panarin did nothing wrong. He wasn't drafted by Columbus, didn't chose to play there, got traded by Stan Bowman after signing a team-friendly deal, was a great player for them, and was honest. I get booing the guy a little the first game back. But this was not a good look, IMO.
fans boo former player for leaving for more money. What a shocker.

If he played for Toronto he would get his own day named after him to help boost his self esteem from being booed. Good think New York isn’t soft like that.

If he left New York he'd be getting Dear Artemi anthrax letters for the next 20 years.

The one difference is Stamkos never made it to July 1 as a UFA, where as Panarin did and there was some reports he was going to the Islanders.

there were also reports of Stamkos going to TOR but that was probably just the normal propaganda Toronto media. He did meet with them though so anything’s possible.

those reports of Panarin going to the isles were released by his agent and used as leverage to try and squeeze the most out of the Rangers. Rangers were always his preferred destination but couldn’t offer him what other teams were willing to offer. He likely never really even considered the islanders. I’ll never forgive Bob McKenzie for getting my hopes up. Panarin would have been the absolute perfect fit for the islanders and a much needed star forward who could score and out up points.

with all that being said, what Panarin did was just business and no different than most free agents. He wanted to get paid and deserved to get paid. Islanders fans don’t hate him or have any reason to boo him other than him being a Ranger.

If fans think that booing bothers that player they are fooling themselves. Players LOVE to get booed in their opponents arena, it's a badge of honor and only motivates them to play even harder.

As a Jackets fan, I'll concede the point that Panarin didn't owe us anything. He's a free agent, he's really good, he can go where he wants. No question.

It's just a little odd that some of you seem to be taking the position that we, the fans, somehow owed him something. We don't.

He didn't sign here; he was traded here. He signed no contracts here. He left at the first opportunity, and was never open to the possiblity of staying. So why should we make it nice for him when he comes back? Yeah, he played well while he was here, so we cheered him while he was here. The moment he could leave, he left. So we don't cheer him anymore. He's the enemy.

Besides -- it was Valentine's Day. You're supposed to be bitter and resentful to the ex that dumped you. :)

Fans are lemmings, like when they boo Bettman because the guy next to them is doing it.

I still haven't figured out why Canadians fans boo Subban? He got TRADED, he kept his commitment to the hospital in Montreal, and has never said a bad word about the organization, if anything they should cheer that man when he steps on the ice. :dunno:

"Canadians" boo subban because he is a great player and a constant threat on the ice and booing is all we can do to try and psyche him out. Off the ice he is universally loved by us. As far as I can tell players dont take offense to the booing... for instance trouba mentioned how he liked it when he came up to play in winnipeg. For some reason the only objection I've heard of fans booing is other fans.

Except he didn't. The Jackets literally offered him McDavid money (proof) and given the way taxes are in New York compared to Columbus, the Jackets offered him way more money. He just wanted to play in New York. Which was his right.

The Jackets literally did everything possible to keep him here, short of tying him up and forcing him. He took a pay cut to play there, a team lower than them in the standings and older, which increased the burn fans felt.

Columbus doesn't need "assets" they need (and had) a gamebreaking PPG forward.

It makes sense to be resentful when looking at what the team could have been if Panarin had chosen to stay.

It's one thing if the team repeatedly doesn't make the playoffs a la NYI and Tavares, but Columbus did.

It's another thing if the team doesn't open the purse strings a la Ottawa and Karlsson, but Columbus did.

This isn't the NBA. When a team wins, the player gets along well with teammates, and the team offers max money, that player is supposed to stay.

So yeah, he is going to get booed.
There have been quite a few players that have left cozy places to go somewhere where the location fits their life better. You need to realize this is still their job. Sometimes people take lesser paying jobs to go somewhere they’re more comfortable. That’s not some kind of slight on the former employer or city. Athletes are people too and have lives outside of hockey.

and “team wins”? They barely slipped into the playoffs and won a round. They were also losing a lot of other top end players in UFA on a team he lead in points by almost 20. Not like he was leaving some ridiculously cushy situation. And also yeah he got along with some other players... one of his best friends Bobrovsky was also leaving that summer too though....

Boo him if you want, you just look silly doing so imo.

This is a little revisionist as well.

I won't put up a huge fight on the "barely slipped in" part, except to note that the east is a meat grinder. If they played in the West, they'd have been only three points back of second place in the Pacific, and within two points of all three qualifiers from the Central. But they swept the best team in the league, and gave the eventual Stanley Cup finalist from the east all they could handle. They were a lot more of a contender than everyone was giving them credit for.

Also, they weren't "losing a lot of other top end players". Bobrovsky. End of list. That's all. Duchene is good, but he's not top end. And if Panarin decides to stay, who the hell knows what Bob does. Even if all eligible RFAs other than Bread had decided to leave, Panarin still wouldn't have been leaving a cellar-dweller.

Again... if he doesn't want to stay, he doesn't have to. Columbus wasn't the early 90's Pittsburgh Penguins, obviously. Goodbye. But we're not going to give him bouquets of roses upon return. Frankly, I think you're the one who looks silly trying the argument that we're somehow out of our minds.
