Each of those guys has improved significantly since landing with Roykic.

And yes Holden really. They took a less talented version of Gelinas and turned him into an NHL player already.

EJ and Barrie have gotten significantly better under Roy. And for as much crap as Holden gets... Roy and company have taken him from a good AHL defender into a player that is a solid NHL bottom pairing defensemen.

The organization's history isn't great, but this regime is doing pretty good so far.

Really Zads has improved significantly in the last 6 months? Interesting. Roy must be telling him stuff telepathically. Still not a solid NHLer at this point in time.

EJ is still his inconsistent self, with flashes of brilliance. No way anyone can claim this as evidence of the avs ability of developing defenders.

Barrie is self explanatory.

...and Holden is not a solid NHl player so yeah.

This is not a shot at Roy or Sakic, over the course of the last 15 years show me these defensive players the avs developed and I guarantee you it's one of the worst in the NHL. Way before SAkic/Roy's time this is an issue. Sometimes it's okay, to criticize the team. They're not going to be good at everything. Let's keep the homerism to a minimal, shall we?

Yes Zadorov has improved and he'd be fine playing in the NHL if that's what they wanted. Not saying they are in the same point in their careers before anyone jumps on me but Barrie gets the "take the good with the bad" card, Zadorov should get it too if he were here. Nobody had any issue with how he played here until that last game and nobody wanted him sent down.

So you are writing off this regime's ability to develop defensemen before a single one they drafted is solidified a NHL spot? And taking EJ from a complete mess and looking like a bust to a passible #1, but at least a top pairing guy is not development? And Barrie becoming one of the best offensive defensemen isn't because they helped him?

Defensemen take time to develop. Roy and Sakic have done at very least a decent job rounding out who they had, and have added some young talent. Let's see how Bigras and Zadorov develop before saying this regime can't develop defensemen. There isn't proof either way at the moment. The signs are trending up, but those are just trends at the moment.

As I said this is not on Roy and Sakic... it's the organization as whole. They've had trouble with developing defenders. It'll be like a preds fans claiming they don't have problems developing offensive players.

Some organizations can develop certain positions better than others.

The guy I saw in his last stint was not a significant improvement than the guy I saw in October. I don't mind if he's playing in the NHL, I'd actually be in favour of that but to use him as evidence for the avs prowess in developing Dmen is absurd. Considering his age, he probably should get that same treatment but some won't give it to him because he's not hitting 40 points.

It isn't like the organization hasn't gone through significant changes or taken steps to improve in those areas... There are different coaches, scouts, and management throughout the organization. The past regime failed in that area, without a single doubt. This new regime hasn't really had a chance to have that impact yet, but the impact they have had so far has been positive.

EJ made Team USA...hardly a mess his whole career in the NHL. He had his ups and downs throughout his career. No different since Roy/SAkic showed up.

Barrie is an offensive defender...this hasn't been a problem for the avs.

At no point was post meant to bash Roy/SAkic specifically. The idea was to show Drury, how a team such as the devils( who are probably the best) couldn't develop Gelinas, to expect him to develop here, is ill-advised.

That's an understatement. Not only have our core players improved under Roy, but we are seeing proper development taking place. The previous regime couldn't develop Gretzky if he came through the organization.

EJ has had his ups and downs, but his ups were with St Louis and under Roy. The season of his trade he was bad with St Louis and for a couple seasons he wasn't any better with the Avs. He was well on his way to just being a middle pairing guy. He is better than that now.

I'm just saying judging the Avs based off what they did 5-10-15 years ago is ill-advised. We won't really know how good this regime is at developing defensemen for another couple seasons. Signs are positive, but still remain to be seen.

... and if you want to crown them already crown them but they're still no where near the devils in that regard.

He couldn't on a team that breeds defenders for a living. Devils are so defence oriented, do you really think they give up a guy they believe can turn into a solid player for pick? Given the avs history of developing defenders do you think they can turn him into something? I wouldn't bet on it, he'll probably be out of the NHL by next season.

It is all about the type of D man he is. An offensive D man is not something NJ is known for developing. Even journeymen D men are not what you look to NJ for. They typically develop strong shutdown first D men that play well in a system...and when they leave NJ they struggle.

The Avs history of D men is developing offensive first D men, Ozo, Liles, Barrie, and to a lesser extent Skoula. They also are great at getting water from rocks like deVries, Klemm, Holden, Finger, Clark, Miller, and so on as you list journeymen.

I don't expect Gelinas to turn into the next Rob Blake, but he very well could be the next Miller, Klemm, or even just a Holden. That solid depth D man who fits a certain job on the team. And that is what the Avs need. A complement to the already existing core. He has a heavy/hard shot and is perceived to be a PP specialist...two things the Avs need improvement on.

Gelinas might just not be a systems based D man...and good for him, Colorado is about as opposite of NJ as it can be.

Not sure if this should be in the off topic thread, but there are so many NWOBHM bands:

Saxon
Raven
Samson
Angel Witch
Diamond Head
Legend
Witchfinder General
Tygers (first two albums only)
Savage
Motörhead
Maiden
Holocaust (first album)

I'll answer in the off topic thread then! :)

So what? You know as well as I do that just sometimes development is more about the right fit than just sticking talent with the "best" developers of it. Roykic have had positive results so far, in particular with a player who had very similar problems to overcome (Holden). Just cause it wasn't working in NJ, doesn't mean it can't work any better here. All we need out of him is a bottom pairing dman.

Just curious how Gelinas has been so for the avalanche? Anyone able to provide their opinion?

Weak on the puck, indecisive defensively, overly aggressive offensively and for the most part has shown he's hardly a better option than any other 7th defender we have. Roy will give him a chance next year when he's healed up to calm his game down and learn to play a simple 3rd pairing game with cleaner breakouts and better positioning.

If he can't adapt, he won't be in the NHL much longer probably. I think Gormley played better in the NHL to be honest and they got rid of him easily enough.

Total waste of a 3rd round pick

Totally agree.

This trade made the least amount of sense on deadline day, and makes even less sense now. I'm all for giving the guy his fair shot next year but I doubt it was worth more than a third in a couple years.

What's the ceiling with Gelinas? He was a capable d-man a year ago and according to (delusional) Devils fans the start and end of any ROR trade... why did we get the leftovers?
