Boedker is good at picking guys pockets and positioning himself against the puck. But he sucks at board-/puck-battles. That hurts a lot.

Right now we're seeing the good Boedker, it will be interesting to see what people think when the bad one shows up. And I agree with Mars, he is not worth 5.5.

He's like Grigorenko in that regard and to me it depends on how you look at it. A guy like Mitchell is an animal on the boards. He works hard and digs and digs which leads to him sometimes coming out of it. More often than not though he doesn't win and we end up without possession. Grigs/Boedker may not dig and work in battles like Mitchell but they always seem to be on the right end of where the puck comes out. Rarely when people are digging on the boards do one of those "diggers" get it. Instead the puck usually squirts out to one side and that's where the smart positioned players usually come out with it ala Grigorenko/Boedker.

Landeskog is another dog on the boards but always seems to be on the wrong side of where the puck actually ends up kinda like Malkin.

The board play doesn't bother me as much with Boedker as the times where he floats without much meaning in the defensive zone. They don't happen terribly often, but when they do it is maddening because that point man has all the time in the world. With a player that can skate like Boedker, it shouldn't be the issue it is at times.

All players have spurts. A top 6 player with his dynamic qualities and ability to put up ~50-55 points, you can live with some ups and downs. 5.5 is by no means ideal, but if the Avs had the extra cap room... it is better than losing him.

Bad Boedker in AZ is going to be different than bad Boedker in Colorado. Boeds usually plays an east-west game and when he was in Arizona he would break out of the zone with the puck and go east west waiting for an option but nobody ever gave it to him which lead to him turning the puck over. Colorado is a north-south team and my biggest fear with Boedker is that he wouldn't adapt but the opposite has happened. He's playing more north south than he ever did in his career and when he does start to go side to side he has had one of Mack/Landy/Comeau flying north and he has hit them with the pass over and over which lead to zone entry.

Bad Boedker isn't very physically engaged and shys away from contact and we will likely see this at times but Bad Boedker with the puck is looking like less and less of a possibility the more he plays in this system. It's starting to look like Boedker isn't as much of an east-west player as Tippett made him be.

The board play doesn't bother me as much with Boedker as the times where he floats without much meaning in the defensive zone. This is indeed frustrating and I'm sure we'll see more of it which hurts. I hope Roy can make this stop somehow.

Boedker is fine defensively but wouldn't put him upper tier on this team. I also think he fits just because he's fast and has top 6 skill, which are obviously nice to have. I wouldn't mind signing him and understand there might not be many options but I also don't think it HAS to be him. But I ain't hating. However I think Matthias fits this team like a glove but I do know he might not always be balls to the wall over the course of a season like he is now. But he's a bottom 6 guy that can actually be competently used with Landy if need be and that's valuable.

I agree it doesn't have to be him, and if he doesn't want to sign at/under 4.75 mil wait until FA and renegotiate with him then. However, I love the fact that we know that he fits well with our core and we have the ability to negotiate with him first to try to get him a bit cheaper. This is actually turning out to be a pretty good free agency crop, so it's not a big deal.

Matthias should be a priority over Boedker when it comes to negotiations.

Even though the contract is a year later, I do not think Boedker gets more than Soda.

He has one season (of 51 points) that beats Soda's best scoring year (48). And Soda will likely beat that this year (projects to 53). Boedker has paced 50 points a few seasons, but pace ≠ production (he projects to 52 this year...or 53 if you use just his Avs games to project the remainder).

Given that the comparison is winger vs center, similar scoring, and a bit less defensive prowess, but younger and more potential....I see it being almost a dead heat for the same contract terms.

Still hoping to see Boedker resigned. I feel like besides Lando, he's the best top 6 winger we have. I think he could do well for us over the course of a season with either MacK or Dutchy.

It wasn't posted on this particular thread, but there were posts in the gtd after Boedker's poor game (I fortunately wasn't free to watch today's game) saying they hope we don't re-sign him. I will agree with anyone that it depends on the contract. But I definitely don't understand purely judging him on this game, when he has been at the very least solid for us in an Avs uniform.

I changed my mind on Boedker. We shouldn't resign him. Not because he had a poor game but because we need to focus on acquiring good possession players to change the team's mentality. He's a "hot or cold" bad corsi speedy player. We have enough of these.

I think he's been decent to good since joining Avs. He's a good stick handler, had good skating and is good on the PP. Players usually do well in a short stretch after joining Avs (Mueller and Fleischmann for example). So I wouldn't get too carried away with him and Matthias putting up some points.

There are some big holes to Boedker's game as well, which makes me not want to sign him unless it's a good deal. Pending UFAs usually don't give discounts after 20 games with a new team, so I wouldn't expect it. We'll see what happens. If his ask is $5.5M/year as it was reported, it's way too rich for me.

Just for the record, I was against rentals before any deals were made so I'm not against Matthias/Boedker as players. I just don't think a throwaway season is the right time to start using assets to get rentals. This team isn't ready to make any real damage. They could have gotten Stamkos as a rental and it wouldn't have been enough.

Which is fair. I don't think Roykic thought of this season as a throwaway though. And if we are to be fair, this team needs a real pp specialist. If Boedker can be that, I want him

edit: Despite the numbers, our PP has struggled, and lost us a lot of games this season

Boedker needs the speed of Duchene or MacK to be his most effective. It creates space, chaos, and tough decisions for the defense. That line tonight was not that.

I really hope he signs a reasonable contract with you guys..Would be a good club for him going forward and would endear him to the fans by showing that his priority is winning, not money..i think hope and think he could still unleash the dominating potential he has.

i will say that he seems happier in interviews and on the ice than ive seen in a long time

Hoping we lock him up as well. Hopefully around the 4.5ish AAV range. I think he can fit in very well with either MacK or Dutchy going forward.

Coyote fan coming in peace. Glad to see Boeds has been good for you guys.

Question - think the Avs will offer the "supposed" 5y/$25m deal the Coyotes offered Boeds in January?

BTW - decent chance the Coyotes offer Tanguay a 1 year deal for next season.

I could see the Avs offering that if they have the room to fit him and haven't figured anything else out by then (Radulov/trade).

If he'll accept that deal, I'd give it to him. He'll always be a complementary piece to the offense, but we definitely need him or somebody like him on a similar deal in order to get a good start next year.

Glad to see Tanguay is being accepted over there. He was pretty much a pariah around these parts by the time he was traded. If he still has gas in the tank I'd be happy to see him keep playing.

I would sign Boedker for 5M/yr so fast.

Guessing he gets closer to 6M on the open market.

I would even go 5.5M/yr but I'd want term (6 years).
