#Leafs Franson needs more evaluation, wait till swelling goes down, but doesn't expect broken bones. At least a couple days off the ice.

I'm still not a Franson fan, but I thought his decision making in the defensive zone is much better this year, and he is using his size better. He can still make dumb plays on the offensive blueline, and his skating is horrendous, but he has an elite shot on the PP and can PK. He can be a great #5-#6 defender, and will only get better if he can understand his lack of speed is an issue, and can play a safer game (Hal Gill). Our prospects are playing a safer game that I have heard the coaches are preaching (Less pinching, better gap control).

My problem with Franson is, if Gardiner/Rielly take over top PP with Phaneuf in the future, why pay a #5-6D, who also plays 2nd PP/2nd PK, 3.3M a year. Surely there are cheaper RHD options, or young guys who will be able to step up and take over that role. Maybe not his role as a #4D, 1st PP, and 2nd PK from last season, but I didn't even want him doing that in the first place.

Rielly had 27 points last year, with 90 minutes less PP time. 12PP points - point every 11.6 minutes of PP time
Gardiner had 31 points, with 48 minutes less PP time - 11PP points

Franson had 33 points. 18 PP points - point every 12.7 minutes of PP time
Phanuef had 31 points.

Franson certainly has his strengths, but Rielly in his rookie season, had a higher point per minute rate than Franson did on the PP.... I question how much Franson will really be missed. Rielly will replace him on the first unit, and it won't be too long before that happens. Franson is going to be a third pairing, second pairing PP specialist on this team very soon... and be asking for $5 million to do so....

That is a beautiful stat.

Remember a few years ago the Wild defenceman who was shoved into the end boards and broke his leg in about twenty places, that was a deliberate shove and guess who shoved him? Mitchell. The other night's shove of Franson into the boards was just as deliberate and glory be, who was it? It was Mitchell again. No coincidence.. The league does not need these guys and the sooner Mitchell's ilk are out of the league the better. I freakin hate guys who deliberately try to injure and pass it off as, who me? Someone needs to crosscheck Mitchell's teeth down his throat and soon. Just another Cooke. Just another slime ball. Just another a-h. Figures he's in Buffalo.
Let's hope Cody is ok.

I was watching a bit of an Oilers game and couldn't help notice Darnell Nurse (sp?) and it got me to thinking about Franson.

I like the way Nurse plays the game and he's only starting out, he's not really really physical but he moves on the ice so well, he seems so wiry. Anyways, he's likely taller than Franson (seems like it) but he's just so agile and I thought, if Franson could be more like that - just a little more Gazelle like, it would be good. I didn't follow Franson's junior career, but, I'm guessing (maybe wrong) he was lighter and moved around quicker then.

My only real criticism of Franson has always been his speed. If he could move faster, he'd be really really good!
