I feel this would of been different if Benning atleast showed some interest in resigning Tanev from the start. Then maybe Tanev would still be on this roster with a little bit of a hometown discount. Instead Benning completely ignores our top defensive specialist, until the very last moment when it was too late. Our moron GM only spoke to Tanev when his master plan of aquiring Ekman-Larsson fell through.
If I were Tanev i'd be pissed too.
Calgary Canucks got a lot stronger picking up Marky and Tanev, while we got a lot worse.

I wish Tanev the best, he will remain a all-time classic Canuck. He deserves better than the bullshit ending he received here by moron Jim Benning.

Letting Tanev walk is a bigger crime than letting Markstrom go. Honestly, what the hell is Jimbo doing here? 4.5 M is a reasonable contract for Tanev.

This off season sucks. No draft picks, lose guys to FA. Good fun.

Meh, nobody is scared of Calgary anyway. Giordano is on his last legs, and Hanifin-Andersson is not an intimidating top pairing. Tweeners upfront, good luck Marky.

Sure but teams will love playing Vancouver and the shooting gallery we will become.

If and when Edler is sidelined next year watch for a really tough time for the Canucks.

but the offseason will once again be an if this and that happens.

1. If Hughes continues his progression.

2. If Myers plays up to the potential some have for him, something he hasn't done for quite some time now.

3. If Oli makes great strides.

4. If Rathbone.....

Who is even left on the market to be a bargain play and help solidify this back end.

Maybe the goaltending coach can resurrect Hotlby.

The ugliness of our FA signings over the years has been covered up along by tanev and marky's stellar defensive play. Now we'll see it exposed next year. For better or worse, this is truly all Benning's team now.

This ones gonna take a while to get over

Loved this guy as a player. There’s so many small things he did right that I loved showing players I coached.

His route to the nhl, his tireless effort, how fearless he was. Just such a good story. Was so happy when he got to play for team Canada and finally the hockey world took notice with mcdavid singing his praises.

Best of luck Tanman, you deserved better. Hoping we can give him and the pug a proper send off.

Gonna miss his toothless grin and stoner personality lol

Happy for him though, Canucks got his best years and I think he’ll be solid for Calgary during the next 2 seasons but I don’t see him ageing well with all the shots blocked, hits taken and injuries he’s been over the years.

Dude was a warrior for this team, wish him all the best but f*** the Flames

They needed to replace Tanev. Hes a black hole when it comes to offence, not very physical, and injury prone. The problem is they have no viable options to replace a top 4 rhd. Theres no one in the system ready to step up and take on those hard match up minutes. Going the UFA route, would a guy like Hamonic or Barrie make them better? I doubt it. They should have planned for this. It will be very frustrating if this team takes a step back for a year.

Well at least if we go off the rails next year we will at least have our 1st rounder for the 21 draft and Podkolzin coming here for 21-22.

It will be very interesting to see what Dmen come in to replace Tanev and Stecher for next year though.

The Canucks are better off in a lot of ways

We want to be a young exciting team, we can’t have veterans on 4+ year contracts, letting Tanev and Marky go came down to term and I’m totally fine with the results, love those guys but it’s time to refocus.

In two years we will be rid of all of our non-core contracts ( minus Myers ) We can build our team around them over the next two years. Some of the big things to look forward to is the expansion draft for two reasons, if we still have all our assets which right now we do, we can take advantage of a team wanting to capitalize on getting an asset for a player they would otherwise lose to Seattle.

I’m also fine with having a roster spot available for Hoglander/Podz and Juolevi/Rathbone next year

If we end up signing anybody this offseason I want maximum term to be 2 years, I’m all good with Barrie for 2 years

going all in anytime soon is gonna turn us into the Oilers, mortgaging too much right now to clear the cap space will cost us too many futures

bargain basement time Jimbo; Tyler Johnson 3rd line 2.5 million please

You gotta wonder how these decisions might impact the young players. We lost two locker room leaders in Markstrom and Tanev. We moved on from Stecher who was really close with Boeser. I don't know. Just feel like I got punched in the stomach yesterday.

Yeah with Barrie going to EDM (which I can't say I'm sorry about) very interested to see what we do to fill up the right side now? Hamonic? A trade?

No way we start the season as presently constructed - moves yet to be made I'm sure.

"We have to stand back and stand by for a bit, going all in anytime soon is gonna turn us into the Oilers"

This already happened by insane signings last year and the miller trade, and the Toffoli trade. Congrats, we are already here!

"Some of the big things to look forward to is the expansion draft for two reasons, if we still have all our assets which right now we do, we can take advantage of a team wanting to capitalize on getting an asset for a player they would otherwise lose to Seattle."

This GM has not done this throughout his entire tenure here, and you believe he will suddenly do it and it will improve our team.

Absolutely egregious rationalization

My favourite Tanev stat: There was a point roughly halfway (?) through the Tortorella season where Tanev had a positive goal differential on the PK. Just ridiculous.

Best of luck to Chris in Calgary. This one hurts.

The shooting gallery we will become? I would say that was already happening last season which is why we need to revamp our D core starting with Tanev. Of course Benn and Fantenberg were awful too, but Tanev is somebody you want on your 3rd pairing rather than your 1st.

It was noticeable in the offensive zone when he got shifts with Petey, JT, and Brock because Tanev is somebody you don't have to defend in the offensive zone his shot is a muffin. Teams left him alone at the right point. Hughes carried his pair, Edler carried his pair and Myers had the honor to play with Benn/Fantenberg.

We need a sturdy 3rd pairing because Myers is better with Hughes than Tanev. One of Rathbone/Juolevi/Rafferty will make an impact IMO we just need to replace the PK ability of Tanev and some more veteran depth (3 vets remain on defence).

I was being sarcastic. Tanev isnèt the problem on the back end either, he is a perfectly fine as the teams 2nd pairing with a guy like Hughes.

If Tanev is on your 3rd pairing then you don't need him having 4 guys better than him. how many teams can really do that not us for sure.

Of course Tanev has a job to defend not all Dmen are Hughes in the offensive zone and its also not like teams try to take away the shot from Hughes who has a muffin himself.

Myers is a waste of money and is big, that's about it.

Relying on one of Rathbone/Juolevi/Rafferty to make an impact in the NHL next season is risky business to say the least.

Calgary now has a second pairing guy who can defend 20 MPG and do very well on the PK as well, something we now are looking for.

Hiding under WTG's bed...
Rathbone who has zero games of professional hockey at any level on his resume..to have any kind of meaningful minutes at the NHL level this upcoming season. That’s a HUGE leap of faith.

And people complain about Tanev’s current effectiveness.

4 years is too much for Tanev on that deal. He's already 31 years old. Every year counts. Canucks core isnt done after just 2 years. You have to play for the long run. What if in 3 years Tanev is heavily declined and we need to re-sign Bo/Brock when their deals are up?

As for going to the flames. Both Marky and Tanev cashed in to the highest bidder. Unfortunately it was the flames. It's their last major contract. There's no hard feelings there.

The team may take a step back next year but it's not the end of the world. The team needs to continue to draft and develop / and not give out terrible contracts.
Oh jesus christ. 31 or not, Tanev was still the best defensive defenseman on the team by a mile. Those are the players you *actually want* to sign. What if in 3 years we're still looking for a replacement for Tanev? Once in six years has Benning found a dman better than Edler or Tanev, at least on one side of the ice. Markstrom, 6x6, full NMC, okay fine. Enjoy Calgary. But Tanev? For that price? Gimme a break. One year the team splashed out 6x6 for Myers, and next you're telling me a better defensive dman isn't worth 2/3 of that? Please.

It's one thing to say the Canucks need to revamp their defense. I totally get that. But:
  • Tanev gone...okay.
  • Tanev gone for nothing...not okay.
  • Tanev gone for nothing to the f***ing Flames...really not okay.
  • Tanev gone for nothing to the f***ing Flames for a reasonable contract the Canucks should have easily given him...really really not okay.
  • Tanev gone for nothing to the f***ing Flames for a reasonable contract the Canucks should have easily given him while also losing Stecher for nothing and replacing them with empty air because wehave nobody in the system even close to either of those players...f*** ME IN THE ASSHOLE.
That's where I'm at with this. I remember so many people on here crowing about the Canucks have turned the corner, what a great, exciting young team on the rise they are, blah blah f***ing blah. Now what? They made the second round of the playoffs to...lose their star goalie, best shutdown dman, expensive rental winger and overworked depth dman? This is the outcome?
