You don't make cap room by waiving someone. You make roster space by assigning the waived player to the minors however.

I see him getting picked up by someone who needs a body for the rest of the season.

But he can also be used if a team the Wild are trading with are able to take him on if he's not claimed, with the preference being that he get claimed by someone else. Jyrki Jokipakka is last year's case.

He's really popular and by all accounts a great guy, but there is just no room for him anymore.

The Wild tried to trade him the past few days to give him a chance elsewhere. If he gets claimed, best of luck to him.
