That may play into it, but you don't say that sort of thing about your own player unless it is true.

Yes, coaches are known to say things like 'This guy is great and shouldn't change a thing - working on getting better will just make him worse'

You don't this his college coach saying his game is a work in progress is not telling?

Has he said the same about Fox?

he’s a third round draft pick in his second year of college hockey who by all accounts needed to work on his defensive game. i don’t see anything wrong with his coach being honest that he isn’t ready for the nhl (he isn’t) nor does that make me particularly concerned about him as a prospect

Are you joking? “Reilly has become a leader on this team and plays with great maturity” is absolutely something a coach would say if it were true.

Those comments are a little alarming and “early in his development” is not something I want to hear about a guy almost two years after he is drafted. I’m not saying he’s going to bust or anything, but I think it’s clear that this is a critical assessment from someone with the authority to make it. I hope he does continue to improve because he’s certainly a prospect I have high hopes for.

Coaches are not known for praising their players in public. Supporting them, yes, praising them, not really.

More importantly, if Walsh's defensive game is poor, it's much easier to teach defense than it is to teach offense.

My initial post was not a condemning of Walsh as a prospect, but we have a lot of signs pointing to him still needing a fair amount of work, his college coaches comments being the most obvious and recent.

walsh isn’t fox

Couple things:

1)That is kind of my point. He's not as good a prospect.

2)I'm arguing against the idea that a coach saying something like "this guy needs work" is common place.

Clearly I caught games where Walsh had a good game defensively or something lol. I didn't see poor defense from him at all.

i don't think it should be telling because i at least was under the operating assumption that walsh isn't ready yet, and his potential as a prospect is basically a mid pairing/pp specialist, he doesn't have the #1 all around potential that Fox has, and we shouldn't expect that

I hear you but there is a difference between HF assumptions like you and I have, and quotes like this from a players coach, even if they are only validating our assumptions.

Well there is a big difference between poor defense and good defense. And an even bigger difference to NHL ready defense.

yea but I didn't see him out of position, or getting caught in a dumb pinch or floating around in the offensive zone instead of getting back (sound familiar?) At the same time, he was still doing his thing offensively. Could be a consistency/learning thing for him.

Walsh should consider playing in the ahl next year and is probably ready for the challenge but I feel he plays one more year at Harvard, it won't hurt him as a player. He would be the go to guy for sure without Fox there. Some extra added defensive responsibility for him all season could be great for his development instead of playing for Binghamton who was a mess the last 2 seasons.

What a year for Smith. Unfortunately we'll have to wait until May 1st for the WHL awards to see if Smith wins league-wide d-man of the year. Josh Brook, the Canadiens prospect, won d-man of the year for the Eastern Conference so I would assume the competition would be between the two of them.
i'm impressed by brook's +/- considering how many PIMs he took

Not that it's the greatest source nowadays, but The Hockey News did its annual Future Watch issue. Devils top 10:

1. Ty Smith (20th ranked prospect league wide)
2. Jesper Boqvist (75)
3. Mackenzie Blackwood (78)
4. Michael McLeod (87)
5. Joey Anderson
6. John Quenneville
7. Reilly Walsh
8. Nathan Bastian
9. Aarne Talvitie
10. Fabian Zetterlund
