I don't expect much out of them, but I do really enjoy watching Hicketts and McIlrath out there together.

What’s done is done. I hated the pick when we made it two years ago, but he’s our prospect now, and I want him to succeed to the best of his ability with this team. Him being a Holmstrom is better than him being a bust.

It is probably better to compare him to Dave Andreychuk if we are talking prospect status anyway. A mountain of a man that had uncanny net-front abilities even before his draft. Holmstrom developed into that and didn't have near the hands Rasmussen already does. Should be interesting, I have just grown to ignore a substantial part of our fan-base that is rooting against the kid for whatever reason.

Btw, is Vilardi still injured? Like, mostly away from hockey for 2 seasons?
The athletic had an article a few weeks ago that basically said he's not cleared to play hockey but his rehab is going well.

Him being Holmstrom is a bust for where he went...

Ras was a top ten pick in the NHL. If you are fine with that being Holmstrom then we are done talking

Played 1000+ games, recorded 500+ points. Yeah...I think I’d be “fine” with that. Not the perfect result, but check the odds on players lasting 1000+ games and being a useful player for most of them.

If Ras is the same as Holmstrom that's a major draft miss...

Okay, he's probably a major draft miss. Again, what's done is done. I'd rather him be a contributing player in the NHL and an asset to our team than be an outright bust. If this guy is a middle six power play specialist, then I'll take it over him being out of the league in the next four years. You have to pick your battles here.

I look forward to the day that we have a very strong and diverse skill set top 9 with an excellent 4th line doing 4th line things.

Top 9 possible players...

Larkin
Mantha
Bertuzzi
Athanasiou
Zadina
Svechnikov
Hirose
Veleno
Rasmussen

Plus others that we have now and those drafted / acquired in the future. There’s only 3 top line positions. We should be excited as to what we can build for a top 9 in the coming years.

If we have a developed Ras on line 3 in a few years that’s awesome.

Fine if those are the only options but I hope he can be at least Mantha level player someday.

Are you guys expecting a superstar to be picked @ 9OA? I mean, the closest in the last 20 years or so is Logan Coture and in his D+2 he was still in Juniors and 9th in scoring. So why don't we take a beat and wait for, you know, the guy to develop a little bit.

No...it’s f***ing not.

You need to disassociate when Holmstrom was drafted and what he produced. Holmstrom is not the norm for when he was drafted. He’s not the norm for even a top 10 pick. He’s top 5 in his draft class in games played, with Ryan Smyth, Daniel Alfredsson, Patrik Elias, and Ed Jovanovski. He’s top 7 in his draft class in points, with Alfredsson, Elias, Smyth, Milan Hejduk, Steve Sullivan and Chris Drury.

The player you’re describing is literally a top 10 performer from his draft class.

Only 337 players since 1917 have played 1000+ games. And separately, only 479 players have scored 500+ points. Holmstrom did both. That’s a list that consists of only 247 names. You’re not talking about an average NHL career; you’re talking about a career that every single draft prospect hopes they could replicate.

Hopefully now you can see how misguided your assumption is. But knowing your tendencies, I’m sure there’s a “but what about” already being cooked up.

What? Wasn’t Pastranak taken at like 19?

I think they all make the NHL, though impacts will obviously vary.

Bert-Larkin-Mantha
Berggren-Veleno-Zadina
Svech-Ras-Hirose

I think AA will be moved for a Dman.

Top ten in points last season, drafted position overall:
58
1
1
3
71
1
1
104
1
2

58 is on a line with 1
71 is doing great work with 2nd rounders
104 is doing work with 6 and 6 overalls

The top scorers are normally a top 3 or with a top 3 player.

Interesting list.

BUT, last two Stanley Cup winners didn't need a Top10 scorer.

And if we go further...

2019 STL - no Top10 scorer
2018 WSH - no Top10 scorer
2017 PIT - yes
2016 PIT - yes
2015 CHI - no Top10 scorer
2014 LAK - no Top10 scorer
2013 CHI - yes
2012 LAK - no Top10 scorer
2011 BOS - no Top10 scorer

Conclusion:

1st overalls tend to end as great scorers, yeah.

But in a cap world those seem not to be the factors for winning the Cup. Deep teams with good depth and defence/goaltending will win.

Teams with great scorers will mostly end up on cap problems which kills the winning depth.

I get what you're saying, that isn't what I was trying to allude to, at least I don't think I was. If we go with that list, look how many top three picks are on those teams. I think Boston is the only team that didn't have a top three pick?
