ROR trade might not have been positive, but the others have been successes. Sakic can’t win every deal, but learned and won most of them including this deal.
Did sakic make the ROR deal ? And what was the return at the time ?

They did give up a far better player for #5D who occasionally plays like a NHL #4 or as someone who shouldn't be in the NHL.
He didn’t look like that kind of dman in the playoffs. He looked like a shutdown, nasty dman which Chicago hasn’t had for years.

Shutdown? Zadorov? He can have dominant games. He also has ones like game 7 against the Stars. Wheel of fortune is a theme with him and the high and lows are both extreme.

Did sakic make the ROR deal ?

Yes. He also made a number of terrible deals for aging slow Vets pushing the team against the Cap.

ROR wanted a salary about 25% higher than the market rate and buyout proof. He started a trend to be paid mostly bonuses every July 01st. Barrie was seeking a new deal and would be moved if they met ROR demands. Mackinnon accepted the market rate, but wouldn’t be paid less than ROR.

AVs were rebuilt after the ROR trade. They lost the ROR deal, but won long term.

Zadorov played almost 18 minutes per game this season...
that was still one of the lowest on the avs. they did not have a real top pairing or a dman who could play in all situations instead had more like 6 top 4ish dmen bednar played around with pretty well. Zadorov had to be the highest ES GA per minute for a dman on the avs and considering the avs are a puck possession team it was painfully watching him kill forechecks because he can't pinch/pass or skate with the puck well. also if Saad is as good on the pk as i remember him being this is a huge defensive upgrade.

To be fair, Sakic didn't have a lot of other options early in his tenure, since Duncan Siemens was literally the only semi-decent prospect the Avs had when he took over as GM. It's not like he chose the old guys over good young prospects who deserved a chance. He chose the old guys over the worse guys at the bottom of the UFA barrel.

It's the same trade like with Barrie. Avs gave away what they don't need - 6th defenseman which blocked Byram and Timmins, and got what they need - true 2nd line LW. Chicago can win the trade as much as they want, Avs are better team after the deal than they were before from any point of view - depth chart, special teams, expansion draft etc.

Yup. Its the perfectly logical and sensible trade. I still love Z though and hope he is a better fit for Chicago than Barrie was for the Leafs. We definitely need to go out there and get a David Savard right now though.

So Saad is overrated because I think a borderline top 6 forward is far better than a bottom pairing D who struggles with consistency and has stopped playing with an edge since his jaw broke?
If you just underrate Zadorov in oder to approach your point from the opposite direction it doesn't help.

I am not a fan of Zadorov, but you depiction is just biased nonsense.

Zadarov was frustratingly inconsistent from Day One. He can be a tremendous, physical beast in one game and then invisible the next. By all accounts he is great in the room and teammates love him but in terms of who got the best, most consistent player the Avs won this deal hands down. Big Z may work out great for Chicago but if he doesn't they can leave him exposed in expansion. If Saad is a great fit for Colorado then maybe they extend him? If not it will be 5 million off their books to use toward Makar's next contract. But a second line (theoretically) of Saad-Kadri-Burakovsky is pretty damn good for the Avs

I think you're referring to Game 6. Zadorov didn't cover himself in glory on the GWG in game 7.

With this trade, it's hard to gauge the winner.

It feels like Saad has been around forever, and should be in the downswing of his career but he's only 27, and he has been a consistent 20 Goal scorer, at 5mill for one more year, 4 mill after retention.

It's hard to gauge Zadorov's true value. As others have noted, it feels like Zadorov is a bigger piece than a 7th D. (He does have a lot of defensive coverage gaffes). And I think that's because he was playing as one of our top 4D during the playoffs (injuries to EJ and Cole) and he brings some intangibles that can't be measured by skatr comparison tools.

Is there a quantifiable metric for the amount of fear opposing forwards feel when crossing the blue line?

Because against ARI, the forwards would skate in the opposite direction rather than take a Zadorov hit, and against CGY in 2019, Tkachuk was causing all sorts of problems until Zads wallopped him a couple times, then Tkachuk kind of disappeared from the series.

And Zads is a good locker room guy, only 25, and only 3.2mill next year.

Tough to say who won this trade. It will depend how Saad fits into the avs offense, and if the avs can still use the cap space they have to bring in more talent IMO

Edit: 5mill after retention
It's pretty easy to gauge who won. Joe Sakic. Joe win again

Z was at the bottom of the lineup and Byram is coming. Timmins is already knocking at the door. Saad solidifies the middle of the Avs forwards and should fit in well in that role.

This is an obvious move for the Avs, even if you like Z. Which I do.
