Big things to come. We might lose Velluci even.

Nah. I watched Vellucci every year he was behind the bench in Plymouth and he grows better every year. I'd bet he stays in Charlotte for at least another two to three seasons and then makes the move to the big time. No doubt about it though, he more than deserves a shot.

I hope so, he was instrumental in the Checkers.

It's been an interesting offseason for the Checkers so far. Within a couple of weeks of winning the Calder Cup, they lost:

Forwards
Patrick Brown - captain
Tomas Jurco
Greg McKegg
Zach Nastasiuk
Andrew Poturalski - leading scorer, playoff MVP
Nicolas Roy
Aleksi Saarela
Nicholas Schilkey

Defensemen
Josiah Didier
Daniel Renouf
Dennis Robertson

Mike Vellucci - head coach

In addition there's the usual organizational shuffle:

Forward
Saku Maenalanen - will compete for a spot with the Canes
Martin Necas - widely assumed will play with the Canes

Defensemen
Jake Bean - widely assumed will play with the Canes
Trevor Carrick - tendered QO but not yet signed
Haydn Fleury - widely assumed will play with the Canes
Roland McKeown - tendered QO but not yet signed

Goal
Alex Nedeljkovic - will compete for a spot with the Canes

Every team has offseason attrition, but in this case you could almost make an entire contending team out of the departures.

To restock, they have signed:

Forwards
Brian Gibbons
Colin Markison
Max McCormick
Hunter Shinkaruk

Defensemen
Cavan Fitzgerald
Gustav Forsling - hard to say whether he's bound for Canes or Checkers
Alex Lintuniemi
Derek Sheppard

Goal
Anton Forsberg

Ryan Warsofsky - head coach

The reality of winning a championship in the minors. Every guy gets a closer look at the next level because he has "champion" next to his name. (including coaches, trainers, equipment guy, front office, etc) Veteran guys who were holding out for another season to try to be on a winning team have achieved that, so they retire or go overseas for a paycheck. Everyone thinks they should get a raise after winning and you can't keep the whole team and give them all raises.

It's probably harder to repeat in the minors than in the NHL - and it ain't easy there.
