It'll be nice to see Trinec bring this baby home.

Jokes aside, what is the protocol for who gets how many teams?

I'm not complaining but wondering why Swiss get 5 teams and Czechs get 3 for instance? Again, not complaining about Swiss getting 5 teams or us getting 3.. just don't understand how it works.

There's a ranking system that you can check here: Rankings

Basically, leagues are ranked by points per game (plus some bonus point for reaching each round) every season. Top league of a season gets 100 points, 2nd best league 95 and so on. Then the last four seasons are combined with the older seasons being weighted down. You can get the full details of the calculation by clicking on a league in the link.

Extraliga often had one team doing very well but the others bring the league average down. Swiss teams tend to be more consistent even though they usually perform worse than the best Czech team.

For the sake of hilarity:

Group A:

Swedish champions
Finnish vice-champions
Czech regular-season winners
Solid DEL team, 2nd in the North Division below eventual champions Berlin

Group F:

Austrian league vice-champions, ok not bad
Austrian league semi-finalist, 2 teams from the same league is maybe a bit bad design but ok, whatever, still somewhat decent team
Polish Champions, well those weak teams have to play somewhere
The team that has been Norwegian champions two years ago because no playoffs held since. Hmm. Hmmmm. Finished 4th in the last more or less in-tact regular season. Hmmmmmm.

Traveling to Minsk is not safe, they should play the games abroad if they want to participate. Donbas also plays in Kyiv instead of Donetsk.

We all know that true reason is not traveling. You are not that naive to believe this PR stuff.

I mean, in January the IIHF themselves declared all of Belarus unsafe when they moved the recently concluded World Championships to Riga, that must apply to other competitions like the CHL too as the situation has not improved meanwhile. On the other hand, Yunost should be given a fair opportunity to compete in Riga or other suitable location.

"Due to safety and security issues that are beyond the IIHF’s control, the IIHF Council confirmed today that the decision to move the 2021 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship from Minsk, Belarus is unavoidable."

„With regard to the most recent developments, the CHL Board decided that a participation of Belarus in the 2021/22 CHL season is associated as per today with too many unpredictabilities for all involved stakeholders and therefore, the Wild Card for their champions Yunost Minsk must be cancelled.“
