I don't mind this deal as a Flames fan. He brings size, grit and some offense. The contract could have been cheaper but besides that this is a decent deal for the Flames.

Brouwer's risk is that he might have only 2-3 good years left in that if he slows down much more, he'd be a liability. But with the relatively low cap hit and term, a buyout shouldn't be too big of a problem for the Flames.

Solid player, good leader, and good cap hit though.

Now Backes to 37 defended by TSN is the real head scratcher. They were wary of anyone over 30 before that comment. Some teams get the benefit of the doubt and the Oilers haven't earned that yet.

Reasonable deal for a good veteran winger. Addresses a need for the flames, they got a ton of youth on their team they really could use a veteran forward influence.

While ending age is an important factor in term, it's far from the only one. Should a player **** the bed (relatively to their cap hit), it's a lot easier to move them when they only have one or two years left. A shorter term means you have to ride that out for less time. And in worst case scenarios, shorter term makes buyouts much more viable.

Ugh, that's a lot of money. Like a million too much, most likely. This might actually be the worst contract of free agency so far. At least the other overpays are for guys who are clear top 6, if not top line, players.

Troy is a pretty good 2nd line winger, or top notch 3rd line winger, and $4.5 mil over 4 years is an acceptable price for what he brings. Fills a need for the Flames, who have mostly small wingers, and could use a guy like Troy who brings size with decent grit and 2-way play. Apparently a really good guy off the ice too, should be a good locker room presence for their young team.

Many of the deals today have been big money for 6-7 years, given to guys already on the decline. They're deals that will help teams significantly for a few years, then likely turn into massive albatross contracts. This deal, in contrast, won't have as much immediate impact as signing someone like Lucic/Okposo/Eriksson, but it should be a solid deal for the full term, I don't see it turning into a bad contract like the others.
