It's doesn't put him "right to free agency", it puts him to a year before free agency. Which means they have 12 months to work out a new contract, then if he takes his QO or 1 year arbitration offer, another year to work out a new contract. Yes, there is a chance he takes his QO or arbitration and walks, but that is no more likely than him signing a 5-8 year extension during the final year of this contract.

Give me a break. Tkachuk is 6 months younger, big deal. They have both played 3 full years in the league, are the same age (other than the 6 months difference) and both just signed their first RFA contract.

When you add in those camps and a year of NHL influenced development, it absolutely is a big deal.

He use to run around full of confidence that he could get away with anything, it's an easy game when you feel "full of it" I suspect this year will be slightly different but only after he learns the hard way. lets face it, he's not the brightest bulb on the ceiling.
