Every forward we've drafted high since... Backlund has either graduated or else completely fallen off. I guess Klimchuk is the last one.
The thinness of the forward prospects would be a big issue if our NHL forwards weren't so young across the board. As it is now, there's not really a dire need for replacement up front any time soon. On defence the situation looks great.
Always got a chuckle when people talked about their core on this board, especially when talking about Canadian markets. Leafs and Jets core, too much talent, so young! Wow! Calgary, meh. When I did the math last time, our 'young core' (so, like, not Gio, Backs) was younger than Winnipeg's and like a year and change older than Toronto's.
Calgary's U25 team includes:
Johnny Gaudreau - +PPG Wing (24)
Sean Monahan - ~65-70 Point Sniper C (23)
Matt Tkachuk - 60 Point Wing (20)
Sam Bennett - 30 Point Wing (22)
Mark Jankowski - 15 goal, 25 point C (23)
Noah Hanifin - 30 point top 4D (21)
Elias Lindholm - 45 point C/RW (23)
Winnipeg's U25 Team:
Mark Scheifele - PPG C (25)
Patrik Laine - 70 point Sniper W (20)
Nik Ehlers - 60 Point Wing (22)
Kyle Connor - 55-60 point Wing (21)
Josh Morrissey - 25-30 point top 4D (23)
Jacob Trouba - 20-30 point top 4D (24)
Jack Roslovic - ? (21)
Toronto's U25 Team:
Auston Matthews - 70-80 C (20)
Mitch Marner - 60-70 point Winger (21)
Willy Nylander - 60 point Winger (22)
Connor Brown - 25-35 point Winger (24)
Morgan Rielly - 25-50 (no idea what he is as of today) 2D (24)
Travis Dermott - ?, likely a solid 30 point top 6D (21)
Kasperi Kapanen - ? 10 career points in 55 games, but somehow considered a top prospect (22)
Essentially, each team has a somewhere near PPG player. Each team has a ~70 point player. Each team has a 60 point winger; then Jets just have a tonne of depth and Toronto and Calgary's U25 team is actually pretty similar. It's really why we need Bennett to break out in the worst of ways. If he could get to 50 points this year, that'd be a huge win for us. This would make us a cup contender if everyone else kept pace.
