I wouldn't say winning against the leafs was a surprise. They are a 1 dimensional team with slightly above average goaltending.

Tampa did improve their toughness while the CBJ regressed heavily on offense. It is what it is. If the CBJ do not make any changes on the offensive side for next season they will not get this far. For being such a "young" team some of them need to take some steps while the older guys aren't getting any younger and are regressing.
