about last summer.
Timing should not surprise anyone from OSU. Friday 8/7/2020 was move in day. They did not want to announce football or fall sports was cancelled until everyone was moved in.
My guess is they will go to remote learning, but they wanted the $$$ for the rooms locked in.
I'm a mom to an OSU student. It already is majority remote learning. Things like labs are still in person, but almost everything else is not. They were trying to reduce student density in the dorms by half as well. My kid decided to commute instead this semester since we live close enough and he only NEEDS to be on campus for about 6 hours of instruction per week. Apparently OSU discovered that throughout all of their buildings there are 10 rooms that can accomodate more than 50 students if you follow the social distancing (6 ft) guidelines. That's right, 10 rooms.

Let's see, who's playing. The NFL, NHL, MLB, MLS, NBA, PGA, NASCAR, high School football. I guess the NCAA thinks it's the only organization which cares about the health and safety of the players or drivers.
With colleges cancelling, I would not be surprised to see high school football (and other contact sports) following suit. That is one big domino to fall. The only advantage that high school sports have is that they are limited to a much smaller geographical area than college sports. Less "cross-contamination".

I would love to believe that a group of young adult college students will follow the rules but we know they don't.

For the most part, the pro leagues have been responsible with the exception of the St. Louis Cardinals going to a casino and that one NBA players who left the bubble to go to a strip club.

Also, pros get paid millions of dollars to do their jobs. Sure it sucks for them to live in a bubble or adhere to whatever other requirements there are, but at the end of the day... it ain't that bad. Way different story for a student athlete.

apparently Cavs owner, Dan Gilbert is worth just above 40 Billion dollars, making him the second richest owner in the NBA and one of the richest owners in all of sports in general now that RM/Quicken Loans is on the public market and not the reported 7 Billion.

Per Twitter I'm seeing new reporting that OSU was one of three conference schools to vote in favor of playing, in an 11-3 vote. No announcement yet from the school.

yea, sorry...that same person told me around 430 that when the news came out that, for the time being, Iowa shutting down all practice for all fall sports, put that on hold. If it was even a 'thing', but it was from someone who is in a place to know a few things from time to time about the program.

Don't say anything at all
OK, the George Floyd protests have gotten the Indians thinking about changing their nickname.

Here's an easy solution. Use the name Barons, taken from various hockey teams in Cleveland. Sure it's also the name of one of their division rivals' farm teams, but it has a rich history here too.

The color scheme would be expanded to honor the entire history of sports in Cleveland, changing the shade of red used to wine, and adding gold, orange and brown to the team colors.

Similarly, I've proposed the Braves franchise acquire the rights to the identity of the former NHL team Atlanta Thrashers. using the look verbatim with one minor fix - the hockey stick of the original Thrashers logo (based on the bird called the thrasher) is modified to a baseball bat. The uniforms used by the NHL team would form the basis for alternate uniforms to be used by the MLB team.

Teams reusing nicknames from another sport is nothing new. The NBA's New Orleans Pelicans usurped their name from the former baseball teams in the city.

Cleveland should go back to the Spiders. Think of all the fun baseball announcers would have talking about a Spider catching a fly ball. That would never get old.

Or they can make it easier on everyone and just call themselves the Tribe.

As a fan of the team, that's not a solution. Seems like a lateral move, not really addressing the concerns brought on by the Indians name. I know "tribe" is a bit more neutral but in this country it has the same connotations.

I like Spiders for a new name, though.

The fake cheers are so oddly timed. I keep thinking there's a late flag because of the pause in between the end of the play and the beginning of the cheering.

Ohio State FB game cancelled this weekend due to COVID cases in the Maryland program.

Obviously, I hope all the Terrapin players + personnel remain healthy first and foremost, but this is a blow to Ohio State's chances at making the playoff given that's one less potential win on their resume.

If Ohio State is undefeated at the end of the season, they're in. They are clearly a top 4 talent program in the nation.

Alabama, OSU, Clemson, and Notre Dame. That's your 4 unless someone really falls off (Like Clemson losing again). If Alabama loses to Florida or A&M things could get interesting, but I don't anticipate that happening.

OSU just needs to hold serve, beat Indiana, Michigan, MSU, and the B10 championship (Likely against Wisconsin again) and they'll be fine.

What @CBJWennberg10 said, basically. I'm more disappointed because Maryland actually looks good this year and I was looking forward to seeing how they'd stack up.

Here's a nightmare scenario...the game against Indiana gets cancelled due to covid...both teams then win out. Guess who would have more wins and therefore win the Big Ten East? Not Ohio State.

I think the Big Ten screwed the pooch on this. If you weren't going to start up the season in early October to allow for some buffer/bye weeks, then just make the teams play the games (look at some other conferences...teams are down 15+ players but still playing). Run your tests the night before the game and run rapid tests the day of. The Big Ten also has a much longer "return to play" period with its quarantine period + cardiovascular testing. That's fine - probably the right call, even. But if you're going to do that, you shouldn't have scheduled a season with no margin for these cancelled weeks.
