Question - does Phaneuf get $6.5m plus on the open market?

I seem to remember a few people (Nick Kypreos?) saying that he wouldn't.

Refering to the list below of top FA dmen and the fact that I don't think FA prices have come down in the past few years (lol Kyper), I think it's easy to say Dion would get more than his 6.5M on the open market.

Phaneuf - 28 (6.5)
Boyle - 37 (6.6)
Timmonen - 38 (6.0)
Markov - 24 (5.8)
Pitkanen - 30 (4.5)
Zidlicky - 36 (4.0)
Meszaros - 28 (4.0)
Quincey - 28 (3.8)
Salo - 39 (3.8)
Orpik - 33 (3.8)
Giradrdi - 29 (3.4)
Robidas - 36 (3.3)

With max term? Whoever picks up Dion @ $6.5M for 6 yrs will be boned in the long term. He may be a $6.5M player now (and some would even argue this), but there's no way he'll be a $6.5M player at 35. The fanbase would be all over the veteran overpaid #3D.

Really good point.

Good list - thanks for sharing.

I was curious as to why some felt he wouldn't get that money.

For me he's a lock to get it - only question is whether he gets it here or not.

That's a very difficult point to imagine, nobody knows if that's true or not. A $6.5M player won't be the same in 2020 (when Dion is 35 as it is today).

Is Ryan Suter going to be a $7.5M player in 2025 when he's going on 40? By today's standards of a 7.5M player; likely no.

If Suter can get 7.5M for that term, there's no reason Dion can't get >6.5M for a much shorter term.

Agree with the bold.

I don't think it'll be anywhere but here that he gets it; as he'll resign and we will never know who would have given him what.

I said it a few weeks ago but I think people underestimate Dion in the sense that they think he's got a me first ego, which couldn't be further from the truth. He knows this is "his" team, yes. But he won't jepordize the teams future to get his own payday. I think he'll take a team-friendly deal that is still fair to him (as mentioned on CBC).
