I don't see him turning down a year in the NCAA for the ECHL.

Halak also spent only half the year in the ECHL. In Primeau's case, he would have to spend the year there unless injuries or a goalie trade occurs.
Goalies are different than position players. They need pro minutes.

Keep drafting goalies with athletic ability and good eye discipline. When you've found one that also has a good mental make-up, that's when you have a potential starter.

The mental stuff doesn't normally show until later on when they make the bigger leagues, that's why goalies are harder to project. Mentally is a big reason why M-A Fleury has always left people wanting more and why Team Canada has never trusted him on a bigger stage.

Like any other decent prospect, he should not play more than a single season in the AHL.

If Kinkaid falters and Primeau is doing well in the AHL, bring him up. Next year should be a development season for the whole organization.

As for Price he has a NMC so must be protected in the expansion draft, unless he choses to waive it, like MAF did. Not sure why he would do that unless he has another catastrophic season like 2017 2018.

I fully expect Primeau to be the starter for Laval because he should be the best goalie out of the 4 (Primeau, Lindgren, McNiven, LaCouvee). It will be very interesting to see what they look to do here, as I really hope they don't do that stupid 3 goalie rotation again. I thought it screwed McNiven who sat way too much in between starts.

Primeau doesn't have to be protected. In the Murray-Fleury case, only one could be protected.
If Primeau takes over for Price in 202o-2021 (as unlikely as that is) I expect us to trade price for a monster return as opposed to losing him for nothing.

This cannot ever ever happen (losing Price to Seattle...unless we have a young Murray/Cup winner to replace Price...like it happened Pittsburgh with Murray-Fleury). Plus, Primeau may be in the AHL for at least 2 seasons (that would be enough to protect him, no? plus there might be a lockout season coming up soon?).

Bergevin's ***** job is to definitely protect Price and Primeau.
(if you have to trade Price...if...and with his permission due to NMC...you get a lot for Price and keep Primeau ; this may happen in 2-3 yrs...not sooner, imo). But you just don't lose Price to SEattle. No ***** way.

We're lucky Primeau was available in the 7th rnd...very lucky...now we have to keep/protect him (you don't trade Primeau...you just don't...then again this organization has traded/lost so many playoff winners in PK Subban, Radulov, Shaw...I don't know what to expect anymore).

They're both Capris!! And, they're both 6'3!! (Cayden is the next one!!).

I was saying I'm pretty sure we can keep Primeau without having to use the one spot we get for protecting 1 goalie. That is, we protect Price and still Seattle is not allowed to take Primeau because he's a young player without enough experience. Just like we don't have to protect other young prospects because Seattle isn't allowed to take them.

Having said that, I think we'll lose a pretty good player in 2021, like Lehkonen, Kulak, Mete, Juulsen, or Petry.

I don’t think Lindgren will be with the Habs organization at the start of the season

It's one possibility, or McNiven goes. They seem to want to win in Laval, this means employing more borderline NHL talent and paying the price.
Ie. the goaltender duo could be Primeau with Lindgren as a backup, and this would be better than Primeau and McNiven, particularly given the possibility that Primeau or Lindgren could be needed in Montreal during the season.

Last year McNiven was a good bit better then Lindgren in Laval, the problem with moving Lindgren could be his contract since it's one way but he does have NHL experience vs McNiven having only one decent season in the AHL to his credit.

I''ll never understand why they didn't leave Primeau in the NCAA for one more year.

Primeau wanted to go to the AHL and why not? he was dominant last year and this year he's going to be Laval top goaltender.

He need a better caliber. You are improving when you are playing against better than you. We saw Poehling, he played against men at university when he was young. Today he looks NHL caliber without needs going in AHL

What does he have left to prove at that level? Back to back .930+ seasons, Hockey East goalie of the year as a true freshman and NCAA goalie of the year as a sophomore. Seems reasonable to me for him to go pro now after two dominant NCAA seasons. That seems to be the path most American goalies take, NCAA until they're 20 or 21 and then make the jump to the AHL.

he was outstanding for sure although personally I had hoped he would play one more year so that McNiven would have the chance to be the starter all year if he could outplay Lindgren again. And it would put us 1 more year into Price's contract before having him turn pro. Plus I had wanted to see if he could lead his team to a National Championship.

That said it does make sense as he had one of the best 18 & 19 year seasons of any goalie in NCAA history. That is huge and I can 100% see why he felt it was time to move up to the AHL.

I just feel bad for McNiven who got jerked around in his rookie year as he should have been in the ECHL all year playing a ton instead he barely played. This past season he looked so much better as he had a health issue that was fixed with a change in diet last off-season and I had hoped for him that he would take a big step forward this upcoming season. But with Primeau in the fold, unless he struggles or gets injured, he should be the top goalie and for good reason.

Primeau should be getting more games than the other's combined. Laval can only carry so many, and Primeau should get the most work seeing he is the future. Price has it locked in until he decides to wrap things up.

I would expect that to be the case, but I'm hoping they move or loan one of Lindgren/McNiven as 3 goalies didn't work out well last time they tried it. Primeau needs to play a ton unless he struggles.

Not a good sign if he struggles sorry to say. 3 goalies is not they way to develop any of them. Just hurts them down the road.

yes it wouldn't be good, but you just never know. Look at McNiven, CHL goalie of the year and then he really struggled in his rookie year in the AHL although that was when they went with the 3 goalie system and it was stupid as it meant McNiven sat too much inbetween starts which you never want to see for a 20 year old rookie. He should have been in the ECHL all year and then split the duties this year in Laval.

I agree they need to find a way to rid themselves of the 3-headed goalie monster. Primeau needs to start for sure, but i'd also like to see McNiven get into lots of games so we have a better understanding of what we have in him. If he can play like he did last year, or even better we've got another goalie with backup potential at the least. And, if Primeau does as well as expected, McNiven becomes a trade chip - even though goalies (especially at younger ages) are not valued highly in trades.

Factor in his pedigree and Dad, the kid has the mind to excel at elite level.

Now, goalies are harder to predict so it is more difficult to juge his legitimate potential.

I wouldn't mind having Lindgren stay with the Habs and be used solely for practices or back-up to give off nights to Price (load management). It's an idea that has been tossed around in the last year and I am a big fan. Lindgren being up on the NHL roster would also mean that we can give more games to Primeau. Otherwise, the best option for him would be to be sent to the ECHL IMO or be loaned to a different AHL team.

you can't have 3 goalies on the NHL team for long as it would mean only 20 skaters. it's too long/hard of a season to just have 1 spare forward and 1 spare D imo. Doing for a few weeks at the end when rosters expand is one thing but no way do I see them doing that over a full year.

It will be interesting to see what they do, if they don't trade Lindgren then I could see Primeau starter and Lindgren the backup with McNiven being loaned somewhere. I assume Lindgren gets moved though.
