Slow down skippy, poster says they don’t recall something and you accuse them of being either biased or a liar? lol. Tell you what, if it’s so rampant why don’t you put up some links to it, otherwise maybe keep your own lying or bias in check.

Fair enough. Still find it hard to believe regular HFleafs poster doesn't recall Matthews being said to be the better scorer.

I don't think it was a ridiculous notion.

Before Laine's little hot streak, Matthews had a better goals/game than Laine for a season and a half.

No one knows now what will happen. Laine could cool off, and matthews could come back and tear it up.

Matthews could just as easily outscore Laine next season.

Laine is the better shooter, but the better goalscorer is yet to be determined.

Yeah,I'm not saying it was wrong. Just that a lot of people were saying Matthews is better scorer based on his rookie season.

There may have been someone, or a few, but it may not have been sincere anyway (trolls/jokes). What I remember being said was not that Matthews was a better scorer, but just as good of a goal scorer.

Which shouldn’t be controversial anyway. At the time of his injury Matthews had 68 goals in 135 games in his career, Laine 64 in 133.

16 goals in his last 13 games. 16 goals in 39 shots = 42% shooting.

You see unsustainable hot streak, I see a 100 goal scorer. And before you make a logical argument about his shooting % not being sustainable, keep in mind he ONLY takes shots where he knows he's going to score! :naughty:

This thread is like the Calder threads of last season, except our boy took home the hardware.

I hope Laine wins the rocket this year because that would probably mean that I will win my fantasy league. :D

But you're giving waaay too much importance to Laine's 31 game stretch. It's.....31 games? And it's not even all that impressive all things considered.

Malkin - hardly an all-time great goal-scorer - has the following stretch:

37 games. 30 goals, 59 points. That's a 1.6 PPG and a .81 GPG. higher ppg, gpg and more games played than Laine. No one here is predicting Malkin to hit 75+ goals next year based on that.

And if you think Matthews will never have a 31 game stretch in his career that rivals that - you're delusional. I'd bet there are 20+ players who have had better stretches in the past 10 years alone.

Well the think is that he was on same pace last season. It is very impressive because he has always been over PPG with all the other centers.

Malkin is on his prime & Laine is 19 years old raw player.

We are not talking about stretch, we are talking about his normal production without Bryan Little on his line up. 100 points next season, mark my words.

Winnipeg MB.
Yes, don't you know the guy who is 2nd in the NHL in goals is a #2 wing and PP specialist. He's pretty much replaceable by any other top 6 wing, nothing special. Let's all get back to talking about how good Matthews is and how stupid Jets fans are for daring to compare their PP specialist to the 2nd best young player in the game, possibly generational, selke calibre, better at goalscoring and playmaking centre Auston Matthews.

Only a matter of time before that recycled shooting % argument appears...No one seemed to be mentioning this when Matthews was shooting at 19% earlier this season. But for Laine, who Leafs fans even admit has a superior shot, it always seems to be a focal point. Why? He continues to prove the naysayers wrong.

You also claimed Laine would have 200 point seasons in his prime. Quit lowering your expectations.

Actually it's Jets fans pushing the narrative that Laine is better. Before the Laine hot streak and when Matthews was not injured and playing with better stats then Laine there were no comparison threads.

All I know is I never saw Jets fans compare Laine to Connor McDavid. So it is a matter of perspective I guess who is pushing what.

Want to try that again?

Your quote above from the how many goals will Laine score thread. So not only 200 points, but 110 Goals. Incredible stuff.

He has potential for 150-200 but will score at least 130 in his prime. That kind of player we have here brother.

lol @ people thinkin it's just a hot streak.

He has developed into a different level because his skating is starting to work properly, it was just a matter of time. This is the normal Laine, not a hot streak
