Wouldn't touch that if I was the Canes.

That's before you even consider this allows Hamilton to hold them hostage over a new contract.

1. Canes taking on more cap hit actually does the opposite.
2. Marner is owed 750K this season. Most of his bonus money is paid out, so real dollars, this is a cheap contract. Are the Canes one of the known 17 teams cutting budget...

Yikes, Svech is looking like a similar caliber player to Marner and is still on his ELC. At most this is a 1 for 1. Maybe throw in Staal for cap reasons

This is actually the sort of response I was looking for. I've watched a few canes games, but when I try to look into Svech there is nowhere near the level of hype I'd expect (I am in the Toronto market, I am highly desensitized to hype). I wasn't sure what the internal views on him were, or how disposable Pesce is.

I do Marner gets the clear nod as the best player in this proposal, but this response helps. The trade could even make sense for the leafs in a 1 for 1 (it would buy them another year before they had to worry about cap disentanglement.

Yeah, thats not how contract negotiations work. Saying "we don't have cap, so you have to sign for less" isn't an effective negotiation tactic. He just goes elsewhere, and now they've lost Pesce and Hamilton from their roster.

The deal is terrible for the Canes, there's no justifying it.

Marner (90 point player minimum) is owed 7M per for the next 5 years in real dollars. Which GM isn't taking the call?

Carolina cant afford the 1 for 1, also Pesce is probably the least disposable player on the team besides Aho

I'd rather Svech than Marner as a Leaf fan so I don't think Canes touch this.. prob laugh. Maybe add a signed Andersen and take on Reimer.. but prob not even close there still.

Svechnikov
Pesce
Reimer

for

Marner (700k owed this year, 7M per year owned rest of contract)
Andersen with extension (1m base salary this year)
15th overall

Is probably closer but I still don't get why Carolina moves Svech.

Svech had 61 points in his 20 year old season just like Marner did (and did it in 9 fewer games too). No guarantee he continues to improve to Marner's level, but as a neutral fan I would think that Carolina would gamble on him being close to as good at a much lower cap hit (and longer team control). Svechnikov also seems to be a better goal scorer, which is usually more valued than playmakers.
