The more I think about this game, the more I realize the Canes kind of lucked into a win. They’re going to have to do better defensively in Game 2, or the bounces are going to start adding up.

Still SUPER happy to get the W. But this wasn’t like Game 7 where we took it to the Caps until they broke. This was more of a “we’ll take it and run” scenario.

But did we win though?

Let's take a moment to reflect on what's happening right now:

- This is a team that many on this board expected to make it 10 years outside the playoffs coming into the season

- Not only do they make the playoffs spending <$60 mil on the roster iced every game, but also play at an elite level in the 2nd half

- They then beat the defending Stanley Cup Champions and finish them off in a Game 7 on the road, despite being down 2 Top 9 forwards for the majority of the series

- They just took home ice advantage in the 2nd round

- Vegas has them at 7/1 odds to win the whole f***ing thing and there's a mathematical model that puts them as the favorite at this stage

I mean, this is getting more and more absurd by the day.

No. It wasn't luck. I saw the best postseason performance so far. Yes, the Isle may have had the better chances but that was mostly because of all the individual mistakes the Canes made. I hope it was just nerves...almost all of them never played NHL hockey at that point. Fatigue could have been another reason but those brainfarts started to happen early during the 1st so that likely wasn't the case.
So again, they ran outta gas late the 3rd and the Isle had the better chances but the game was pretty even overall and Lehner saved them a few times, too. Without half of the team having a bad turnover, the Canes would have been the better team and they were on the road. Was there a little luck involved? Maybe. But the Canes played a very good game and were well prepared for the game. Would be unfair to say that they lucked into a win.

Isles are likely a better side than the Caps were but if the Canes continue to play like this and manage their brainfarts then I'm confident that they'll win this series even though the Isles appear to be much better than I thought.

the islanders being rusty vs. us being tired made this an absolute snooze of a game, but it's a win. wins are nice.

Nah. It was low scoring but not for a lack of chances. It was an entertaining, fast hockey game without all the bs of the Washington series. Much better flow.

I had other things in mind, but I’ll leave it at this, you got NYI’s C game at a second home. I know the Canes can be better, as can the Isles. Mrazek player better than his avg, kudos to him. Going to 7.

Have you watched Mrazek lately? That's his standart. Gotta do more to beat him.

Also, it wasn't the Isles C game. It was the best I've seen them play in years...they just failed to convert their chances. They had enough of them.

I did not see a rusty Islanders team last night. I saw a team that was able to out skate by a half step to most open pucks and was able to dominate play for long stretches in the first while flexing on a tired team by pummeling them into the boards. But they were slowed by a Canes solid backcheck and a goalie that was absolutely on his game. We needed our goalie to steal that one to win it and he did. And now we have Home Ice Advantage, and I still think we are capable of taking another in Brooklyn.

Islanders were the better team, but I don't think it was by some huge margin. Luckily we played mostly solid defensively and Mrazek was on his game. And luckily they aren't quite as dangerous as Washington at capitalizing on every turnover and rush. Throw in a little luck, and it was a great steal on the road.

All this on top of missing 3 top 9 guys that we should hopefully be getting back shortly has to make one feel pretty good.

I think the Islanders can get sharper, and we can get more rest, and it's still going to be a snooze of a matchup.

They missed at least three one-timers from the slot, at least two by Brock Nelson, at least one of which goes in on a normal night. Rustiness shows up in the details, not in skating or possession. I don't think you're conclusions are wrong, but the Islanders had the better of the chances last night and if they were a little crisper, they win. But they weren't and they didn't, so who cares.

Having read your post, I actually think we agree on the salient points. I LOVED RBA as a player. True story, as a young man MANY years and years ago playing in a "math simulation keeper league" RBA was one of my prized rookie draft picks.. back in a time when Mark Howe was a veteran D man and RBA was a hotshot rookie on my D corps :P so I know he knows the game and I have known for decades that he absolutely has all the hockey chops -- pragma and dogma!

Why was RBA on you D corps?

Re-watched the OT scoring sequence. Four Canes all made good plays. That is likely why they finally beat Lehner.

Despite my reaction (and many others' reactions in the moment), Niederreiter made the correct play on the initial break. He might have had room to make a perfect saucer pass to Teravainen, but Toews is in good position to deflect. The drop pass to Pesce takes a good stick from Pesce to keep Leddy from disrupting the attack. Once Pesce controls the puck he fires a quick backhand which causes more disorganization for the Isles. Suddenly four defenders are surrounding the goal and they are all focused on the puck. That gives Staal an easy rebound. Because four of the five Isles are puck-focused and still trying to recover there is little pressure on Staal's pass to Niederreiter. NN fires a quick shot which causes all five defenders to move toward the goal. Another easily attainable rebound finds Pesce--who makes the most intelligent play of the series. Instead of quickly firing another shot, Pesce allows the defenders to scramble, which creates an opening for Niederreiter in the center of the ice (perhaps the first time in the game the Islanders allowed a clean look from there). The shot goes wide. Because Teravainen has been in front of the net for both Niederreiter shots, two NYI defenders focus on him. That allows Staal to make a perfectly placed wrister when the puck caroms directly to him.
Staal came up clutch.
The goal was created by four of the five players on the ice. While Niederreiter led the initial break and took two important shots, the skill of Pesce and effort of Teravainen were crucial in finally beating Lehner
