Re-watched the OT scoring sequence. Four Canes all made good plays. That is likely why they finally beat Lehner.
Despite my reaction (and many others' reactions in the moment), Niederreiter made the correct play on the initial break. He might have had room to make a perfect saucer pass to Teravainen, but Toews is in good position to deflect. The drop pass to Pesce takes a good stick from Pesce to keep Leddy from disrupting the attack. Once Pesce controls the puck he fires a quick backhand which causes more disorganization for the Isles. Suddenly four defenders are surrounding the goal and they are all focused on the puck. That gives Staal an easy rebound. Because four of the five Isles are puck-focused and still trying to recover there is little pressure on Staal's pass to Niederreiter. NN fires a quick shot which causes all five defenders to move toward the goal. Another easily attainable rebound finds Pesce--who makes the most intelligent play of the series. Instead of quickly firing another shot, Pesce allows the defenders to scramble, which creates an opening for Niederreiter in the center of the ice (perhaps the first time in the game the Islanders allowed a clean look from there). The shot goes wide. Because Teravainen has been in front of the net for both Niederreiter shots, two NYI defenders focus on him. That allows Staal to make a perfectly placed wrister when the puck caroms directly to him.
Staal came up clutch.
The goal was created by four of the five players on the ice. While Niederreiter led the initial break and took two important shots, the skill of Pesce and effort of Teravainen were crucial in finally beating Lehner
