Once darling is definitely back, they'll waive/trade mac. He's a great low volume backup, but that's not what the canes need.

Agreed, that's not what the Canes need. Unfortunately, it may be better than what the Canes have got. Only time will tell if Darling really did rehabilitate himself this summer or if Mrazek can find a degree of consistency that merits keeping him as part of a tandem. If either of those falls through, Mac probably found himself a home for the season.

A great goalie to take a start every few games if things aren’t going well for under $1 million? That sounds like a safety net worth a roster spot, waive Phil Di Giuseppe instead.

With the addition of Curtis Mcelhinny to the Hurricanes. You can make the case (If Darling plays like he did in the pre-season) that they have 2 Fringe starting caliber goaltenders (Curtis Mack, Mrasek) and 1 solid starter (Darling). I don't see Carolina keeping 3 goaltenders the entire season (hell even after October). One of these 3 is getting shipped off.

Firstly: If your Carolina who do you move? Darling and his contract, take the risk of Mrasek and Mack? OR Move Mack/Mrasek and trust Darling to play like he did in Pre-Season

Secondly: What can Carolina realistically get from these guys? I'd see a 4th or 5th rounder at best for Mrasek or Mack. A 2nd or 3rd at best for Darling

Thirdly: Who would trade for one of these guys? Philly, Pittsburgh, Florida, Calgary, Vancouver, Islanders, Edmonton
Dear god mcBackup and mrazek are fringe starters? Darling is a solid starter? If these statements were true how did you manage to get such a terrific goalie off waivers?

Canes and every other team need 2 goalies who can play 41 games. Only if they have a goalie who plays better when playing more games they should use a higher workload. Obviously all 3 Canes and most other goalies including Andersen (since many Leaf fans are posting in this thread) should NOT be used with higher workloads.

If Darling isn't better than McElhinney and Mrazek they should waive Darling. Nobody will claim him and his contract. That's a good insurance to have.
