With 55 assists and 35 primary assists in 59 games, he's on pace for 76 assists and 49 primary assists. The best ever seasons for D-men for these numbers are:

Total Assists

1. 70/71 Orr - 102
2. 85/85 Coffey - 90
3. 73/74 Orr - 90
4. 74/75 Orr - 89
5. 69/70 Orr - 87
6. 83/84 Coffey - 86
7. 84/85 Coffey - 84
8. 88/89 Coffey - 83
9. 91/92 Leetch - 80
10. 71/72 Orr - 80
11. 92/93 Housley - 79
12. 93/94 Zubov - 77
13. 90/91 MacInnis - 75

14. 92/93 Coffey - 75
15. 89/90 Coffey - 74

Primary Assists

1. 85/86 Coffey - 56
2. 88/89 Coffey - 56
3. 69/70 Orr - 51
4. 90/91 Coffey - 50
5. 92/93 Housley - 50
6. 70/71 Orr - 49
7. 73/74 Orr - 46
8. 83/84 Coffey - 45
9. 91/92 Housley - 44
10. 90/91 Leetch - 42

It looks like he has a very realistic shot to put up the best ever numbers in both categories excluding Orr and Coffey. It also doesn't seem like a complete impossibility that he could go on a hot streak and have the most primary assists outright, although it's still very unlikely.

Actually if you look at the numbers Carlson had a crazy good October and has leveled off quite a bit since then.

I have no idea on where he will end up but I would bet very good money that he won't even hit 74 assists, which is 15th on your list above.

He is on pace for 76 but that also includes his 16 assists in 14 games in October.

Since then his pace has been 39 assists in 45 games.

My bet is that he ends up with around 70 assists give or take an assist.

Still a remarkable offensive season by Carlson.

Did you know that Jagr has the most points ever in NHL history? Excluding Gretzky
Read the title, everything is presented in an easy to read way with no bias or pretense that it's something that it's not. Why would I make some convoluted title about him being on pace to challenge the 3rd most points by an individual D-man in a season? Nobody would have any idea what that even meant.

It's like when people talk about Yzerman's season outside of the context of Gretzky and Lemieux. There are still impressive feats that can be accomplished, some guys are just off the boards good, like Orr and Coffey.

I like how it's the best numbers that doesn't include the best numbers

I'm objectively and statistically the best hockey player in the world - excluding literally anyone else that plays hockey of course.

PS- Carlson is beast mode this season. Just thought the grammar and arguments were hilarious.

What would you have titled the thread? This board has basically turned into reddit with the likes system. Nobody even likes to talk hockey anymore, it's just pithy remarks to get likes.
Nope, your title is misleading and people called you out on it. aside from that, carlson is having a tremendous season. he forsure has a strong case for the norris

I don't know why this guy isn't getting Hart consideration. He's barely getting any hype at all. It's borderline disrespect at this point.
When Ovechkin went on his goal-scoring run everyone started talking about him like "does he deserve to be in the Hart conversation". Meanwhile nobody talks about Carlson.

kind of a golden age for defenceman scoring isn't it? monster years by non-karlsson level guys recently, with burns, hedman, rielly, gio, and now carlson.

another historically significant total we're on pace for is the rookie defenceman assist and points records. assuming he plays every game from now until the end of the year, hughes is on pace for 52 assists and 63 points. that's 3rd and 7th all time.

here are the leader boards.

That's wild. His scoring tear to start the season was an interesting curiosity. That it's stretched so far into the season is remarkable. In my opinion it's the best storyline of the year. I haven't seen a 100pt defenseman in my lifetime.

How is it misleading if I mention both Orr and Coffey in the literal title? It's like you don't have the attention span to read a line of text.

The scary thing is that the OP isn't even adjusting and the players Carlson is stacking up against played in an NHL where scoring was 10%, 20%, and even 30% easier.
Scoring wasn't significantly higher in the late 60's, early 70's. I mean, in 1969-70, only one player broke 100 points, and that was Bobby Orr. Orr was first in two of those seasons, and 2nd in another. Also, keep in mind that in those seasons there were 76, 78 and 80 games respectively. 80's scoring was inflated obviously.

It's baffling. He's on pace to dwarf any point totals Karlsson had and they were ready to build statues for EK. Plus Carlson can actually play defense.
