There was some discussion about including a shutdown D on the team in the Team USA poll. Curious who people think is the better shutdown D of these two. Not best all around, just shutdown.

Carlo has to play the Defense for Krug but McAvoy takes the toughest matchups on the team with Chara.

Went with Pesce

I included Pesce as one of my 6 in the team USA poll because I like the idea of throwing him and Slavin out there to protect a late game lead against the best non-USA talent in the world.

Carlo is more of a pure shutdown guy to me, while I think Pesce is a very good overall player who happens to be great defensively.

I take Pesce even if it's "shutdown". Better puckmover, better transition player. I think if we're talking about Team USA, there's very little room for a player who can only excel at one aspect of the game.

Are there people who really think Carlo will be in the top 7 consideration for Team USA's D?

He very well might be - Carlo is an excellent skater and an excellent shutdown defenseman. That has value if he continues to improve puck moving skills prior to the Olympics.

In that case,

Seth Jones
Jaccob Slavin
Quinn Hughes
Ryan Suter
John Carlson
Zach Werenski
Charlie McAvoy
Adam Fox

Which 2 of these guys would you think he would make it over?

Its about fit and handedness. Do you want a Hughes/(Fox or Carlson) pairing? Who is on your PK? The idea is that depending on who else you choose the roster fit might make sense to have a Pesce or Carlo on the team specifically for Canada who has a lot of firepower. Not saying its the right move or not, but we have certainly seen national teams not just take make an All Star team but bring in guys to play specific roles.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree. Only real argument I can see for it would be pointing to that Canadian team that brought Vlasic (maybe multiple times?) purely for defence, but I think peak Vlasic was on a different level than Pesce and Carlo. I would personally hope they take the best 7. I see no issues with handedness or PK (Suter, McAvoy, Jones, Slavin) bringing the best 7. If Carlo or Pesce go, I would definitely prefer Pesce who can still give us strong puck moving and some offensive abilities.

Fox and Suter....

Adam Fox was a 50pt pace player and was quite good defensively as well. Suter was a beast again, both by the eye test and also as an advanced stats darling. He's older, but he's shut down the best while still having a high-end offensive upside to his game.

To me, both are better than Carlo now and will still be better in 2 years.

And this doesn't even include a ton of other talent which might make the jump....DeAngelo is one of the best offensive defencemen on the planet, how do you not take him, even as a PP specialist? What about Torey Krug?

I just don't see it for Carlo but he may prove me wrong. I would be shocked to see him go over all of DeAngelo, Fox, Suter and Pesce, though, not to mention the others from that list. I don't think he is good enough defensively to justify his black hole output offensively, not in a tournament like the Olympics.
