I’m not saying overpay but please pay even market value.
8x6.2M is not even trying and I remember all that 7.x talk with Aho when Toronto kids were getting +4M on that with midd term deals.

You keep your core guys, franchise guys and don’t overpay your depth players.

Aho/Scev/Necas/TT/Jarvis

Slavin/Pesce/Hamilton.

You keep that and you can walk to the locker room every year and say to the players our goal is the Cup.

Hamilton leaving leaves a huge hole.

Again you pay your star players when they are in their prime.

So you're saying they shouldn't overpay, but they should give Dougie Hamilton $9M for the next 7 years?

They have Aho, Teravainen, Pesce, Skjei locked in through 2024 and Slavin through 2025. Svech was just qualified as an RFA this week. Necas is an RFA next year and is a lock to be qualified. Jarvis hasn't started the clock on his ELC yet and is therefore locked in through 2024.

So of that core group, the only one at issue is Hamilton. Jersey was willing to go bananas on his contract and the Canes weren't. Is that really a wrong move, considering an overpayment for Hamilton would have had repercussions for the Svech and Necas deals?

Ahos rumoured start was somewhere in the 9.x which was very modest starting point

Hamilton+ Ned over what they now did
I don’t disagree with any of this. We as a group have no idea if this regime is going to be right about how they handle all this. The biggest reason for trusting them has been the fact we’ve been in the playoffs for three years since. That unfortunately can also be explained by the fact we were on the edge of being there anyways with a good young team, and that all Waddell did was spend all the assets Francis acquired to hasten the success - which any gm could’ve done. As a group we’ve wanted to believe there was something magical in there about it. Maybe there was and maybe there wasn’t, there’s no answer there. The real truth is that this is maybe the first off season where Waddell has had less extra assets to spend to make things right. Now it’s about gm’ing with what everyone else has. Ned was one of the last “extra” pieces we have from RF aside from a couple of goalie prospects I think, Bean and Fleury recently being moved being part of that.

Rod is also a huge reason obviously, maybe the only actual reason we made the transition into a contending team.

As a Canes fan, I don’t trust management overall but I’m always willing to give it a chance. Like I said we’re only now getting into seeing how good they really are as it’s now about maintaining playoff level and presumably challenging for a cup. Their first move was trading Ned and replacing him with Anderson/Raanta. We’ll see how it goes.

One of the factors that doesn't get talked about was Quinn. Quinn had an extremely tough approach on certain players specifically DeAngelo, Brendan Lemieux, Julien Gauthier.

These are all players who need to play on the edge to be effective. If they ever crossed over, Quinn immediately stapled them to the bench. Meanwhile, Brett Howden could be terrible and never miss a shift. Jack Johnson could make the mistakes of ten men and still go out next shift. Same thing with Marc Staal before he left, and Brendan Smith. Guys who were not young. Would make mistakes they should know better than to make but NBD. DeAngelo or Lemieux or Gauthier make the mistake or take a penalty and they would sit for the rest of the game, sometimes multiple games. Totally unfair the way Quinn ran his bench.

Same thing with the first PP unit. Our first unit was good. Good enough that they either scored, ending the PP, or they spent the entire two minutes in the zone. There was no second PP time available. Yet we wonder why secondary scoring is down. No discipline to have that first unit go for a change. Every subsequent line loses ice time because of it.

I think one of the major issues in the Ranger locker room was that these younger guys called Quinn out on this and he couldn't get them back. Lemieux requested a trade, ADA got voted off the island, Gauthier still kind of sits in nowhere land. The team hated Quinn. His entire coaching staff got sat out for COVID and the team responded with their AHL coach behind the bench by beating the Flyers 9-0. If that's not the writing on the wall I don't know what is.

If Rod gives him an honest chance, I think DeAngelo buys in and gives him his absolute best. If you get that player, it's going to be the best 1m you have on your cap all season. I can't imagine watching my team and rooting against one of my guys to succeed. It's like rooting for your president to fail, which is what I suppose alot of this boils down to anyway. You guys are a conference rival so I don't really want to see you do that well, but this is a little different.

You don't have to love the kid but it's bad karma to go out there every day and wish ill will on people. Be bigger. Be better. Sorry this was so long.

Hamilton is not a guy you pay 9 million to if you want to win a cup unless you have a bunch of MacKinnon contracts on the team for the forseeable future. I know he's an analytics darling and all that but people have been confusing him with Hedman/Pietrangelo and he is not that level at all.

For how shittily Carolina is allegedly run they went from having some of the least success in the league to some of the most exactly as the team switched hands from Karmanos and Francis to Dundon and Waddell

Was an interesting read. No need to apologize on length, but a suggestion, paragraphs. Insightful though.

Yeah, all the people punching down on DeAngelo are missing the much juicier Dallas Eakins in Edmonton esque clusterf*** drama that was David Quinn last year. The 9-0 FU Quinn game was legendary.

Canes fans have seen two sets of numbers, one from our own Athletic writer and someone else tweeted something that was more of a league wide reporter. We have some struggles with our own writer for a variety of reasons. What it’s coming down to on the Canes board is that people want to believe the bigger number because they want to believe Dougie left because he’s all about the money, and not because we went at him with an embarrassing number. Truth is, the numbers presented are pretty different and none of us know what the Canes final offer really was. Canes fans want to assume something fair and everyone who wants to hate on the Canes wants to assume it was peanuts. Which it might have been. We just don’t know.
Whether the Canes offered $6m or $7m (x8) is really irrelevant. Dougie got $9m with a good bonus structure which the Canes were never going to pay. It is all about the money, as it should be for the player and the team. I don’t blame either party. I don’t want to pay Dougie that much with our current team structure and Dougie should take the best offer. NJ team structure right now is different, so $9m makes more sense for them .

Think last season may have been a testimony to Lindy Ruff's value with the Rangers - both in terms of the team overall and in the case of DeAngelo.

Americans have a problem when a player supports his president but have no problem when Russians support Putin. Maybe there's some brainwashing going on idk. Anyways great signing by the Canes and I hope Tony has a great redemption arc.
People are still spreading this idiotic BS that DeAngelo is hated because of his political views?

LOL.

"Google it" has to be one of the most intellectually dishonest forms of argument/evidence going. What happened to "don't believe everything you read on the internet."

It’s not about being intellectual.

“DeAngelo has a history of disciplinary issues. He was suspended twice during his junior career in the OHL, including for violating the league's policy covering "homophobic, racist, and sexist language" and abuse of officials. He also was suspended for three NHL games in 2017, while with the Arizona Coyotes, for physical abuse of officials.”

Don’t believe everything you read. You also must be a huge fan of the Habs draft choice. LOL

Ah yes, the suspension where apparently the "racist" shit he said was directed towards another white player.

Take this shit back to Deadspin.

I will leave with this.

Hate speech, regardless of where and to whom it is directed is still hate speech.

Anyone that does not understand that should really educate themselves more on the topic and not be so dismissive about an attack on a particular group of humans. I’d challenge you to be a part of the solution and not a part of the issue. Good luck.

I'd challenge you to ask what you've actually done in life as opposed to being overly sanctimonious and regressive to the point that you apparently think someone should be literally barred from the league and prevented from making a living for conduct that occurred when they were still at a formative age. People are allowed to redeem themselves. We live in a rehabilitative society, or at least we should.

As far as me being part of the solution and not the issue, I'll put my record of public service up against yours, or for that matter anybody else if we really want to get personal.

Oh wow , a thoughtful and insightful post for once. I agree with what you said. Hamilton made sense for the Devils for numerous reasons and for numerous reasons Canes should not / could not have offered him what Jersey did . As a devils fan I love the signing. Is it a overpayment ? Depends on the team signing him is my thought. Devils have zero cap issues with signing him and will cause us to move a core key piece any time soon unless a pile of kids all exceed expectation. If that happens , it’s a good problem to have and I’m sure Fitz will get it figured out.

It’s a privilege to play in the NHL that every player has to earn. If someone loses the privilege due to character issues, it’s on the individual to earn their job back. He could also work in a different field.

But it’s not like he can’t play in the league again (literally got signed by the Canes). But the fans who don’t like his past actions want to see current actions that feel like he was actually rehabilitated.
